Blazing Minds (92 KP) rated Blithe Spirit (2020) in Movies
Oct 29, 2021 (Updated Nov 2, 2021)
I have to say that I wasn't too sure about this when I found it was being made, but I watched it on Sky Cinema last night and I still prefer the original version from the 40s. The new version just didn't seem to have the same comedic timing and comedy. Shame really.
David McK (3649 KP) rated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft in TV
Oct 26, 2024
Netflix's animated Tomb Raider show, that follows the more recent incarnation of Lara from the early noughties/2010 series of Tomb raider games (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) rather than the 'classic' 90s era Lara.
There are still plenty of nods in there, however, to those original games!

Ok is the perfect descriptor for this film.
I have two major gripes, first of which is that around half an hour needed to be edited out. Some of the scenes were excruciatingly long, and the use of the singing over and over again was really tiresome. The second gripe is that there was nothing new or original about this film. Everything was kind of obvious from the very beginning.
Jeff Bridges acted the same as he has in films for the last 10 years, so nothing new or original there. Chris Hemsworth was nice to look at, and he was a convincing Charles Manson-esque dude. I'm also not sure as to why they'd give Jon Hamm's character an interesting story, only to discard him.

Dean (6927 KP) rated The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018) in Movies
Nov 26, 2018 (Updated Nov 26, 2018)
Hmm
I was looking forward to this after having watched and enjoyed the original Swedish Girl with the Dragon tattoo series of films. Even the US remake of the original was very good because the story was just very interesting.
This feels very different. From the Bond like opening credits and plot about a programme that can hack any nuclear missile world wide. It's very broad in scope... Without actually having a big plot feel to it. It's not a bad film, it's an ok Thriller. After the high standards set by the other films though this is a step down. Check out the the Swedish ones if you haven't seen them.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Zombieland: Double Tap (2019) in Movies
Oct 23, 2019
I have mixed feelings at the unnecessary Zombieland sequel. I loved the original Zombieland. It was smart to take a lot from the original for this sequel, so, it was very much the same. I can't decide if that was a good or a bad thing.
Zoey Deutch's character was super annoying, and reminded me of all the basic b*s in 2009. I also found the doppleganger thing, and relentless repeating of the rules similarly annoying.
The zombie kills were cool, and I did like the way they were explaining the different sorts of zombies.
Overall, I liked it, but it was much of the same. I guess if it ain't* broke, don't fix it.
* I do not use ain't IRL, but it's the saying.

Matt Peers (0 KP) rated Aladdin (2019) in Movies
Apr 20, 2020
A great live action remake. The kids and I fully enjoyed this one. If you have to choose between this one and The Lion King remake, give The Lion King a miss. Aladdin does not skimp on the music, it even gives Princess Jasmine her own new powerful number. There is a strong Bollywood influence that creates a feast for the senses no matter what your age. Overall, Aladdin gifts us with more original content and developped characters whereas The Lion King remake played out like a less cute, uninspired carbon copy of its original. Robin Williams' genie was inimitable but Will Smith's own take is 'fresh' (geddit?) and just as charismatic in its own right. If you have kids, treat them to this.
