A Carpenter Masterpiece
With an excellent eerie score, chilling suspenseful tone, realistic grounded acting, unforgettable quotable dialog, and genius inventive camera work. John Carpenter's classic slasher about a boogeyman possessed escaped inmate stalking babysitters on All Hallows Eve has been a huge inspiration for slasher films in generally. Not mention it spawned 7 sequels, a remake with a sequel, and a reboot. But after all these years John Carpenter's original Halloween still stands tall above the rest. A masterpiece!

"Most of my life I’d heard of this amazing film and knew that Akira Kurosawa created the original visions that spawned The Magnificent Seven and Sergio Leone’s “Man with No Name” flicks, which I watched regularly growing up. It wasn’t until Kurosawa’s Ran hit theaters in the eighties that I was finally exposed to his artistry and power. And Criterion has given me my favorite of his films in the most pristine, perfect presentation I could imagine."

"I watch this film once a year. I’ve studied it. I’ve graphed it out. After hundreds of years of love triangles, to have resolved one in such an original way is truly astounding. The moment William Hurt deceives Holly Hunter with the fake crying is just heartbreaking. Not to mention the sweating set piece, which is among the great comedy bits. It also introduces our three main characters with startling economy and humor, a feat that is near impossible."

"Going a little more lighthearted, number three is the original Jumanji, which is so cheesy because I was in the remake, but that was always one of my favorite films of all time. It’s just pure nostalgia. I think I’m right in that age bracket where it’s like a classic to anyone who’s around my age, and anyone who’s outside of that, it doesn’t seem like it’s so much of a classic to them. Loved it."

"He’s a dub reggae guy from the late ’70s. John Holt sang the original song ‘Man Next Door’. When we started the band, I had a clapped-out Mercedes Estate that I picked up for £60, and we used to drive everywhere in that car – to The Chateau where we used to play, and each others’ flats. This was on a compilation Paul had made, and we’d rewind the tape and listen to it over and over again."
