Joelene Marie (28 KP) rated Gilded Cage in Books

Wow! One of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading! Totally original plot, superbly written, with amazing world building and well developed characters. It sucked me in from page one and never let go, I flew thru the story and was left wanting when the end came (far too quickly, mind you, as this is one I never wanted to end) and what an ending it was! I absolutely can't wait for the sequel! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review this title!!

Lee (2222 KP) rated Bleach (2018) in Movies

Bleach is a live action anime movie currently showing on Netflix. Teenage boy Ichigo Kurosaki acquires powers from a wounded female soul reaper and sets about destroying evil soul-eating monstrous spirits called Hollows. After about 40 minutes of listening to the awful English dubbing, I remembered that I could switch to the original Japanese audio track with English subtitles, and my enjoyment of Bleach immediately increased tenfold... Bonkers Japanese action with big ass swords and magical bows and arrows. A slow start but lots of fun towards the end.

B (62 KP) rated The Canterbury Tales in Books

I read this book in preparation for teaching my 7th graders and was extremely pleased. I remember reading parts of the original while at uni and feeling absolutely bored as I had to translate the Middle English before making any sense of it. McCaughrean's adaptation, while I'm not sure how accurate, is extremely enjoyable. I especially like the stories told by the Knight and the Wife of Bath. I recommend this text to anyone who has ever wanted to read the classic book but just doesn't have the time and patience to suffer through translation.

Yoshi (40 KP) rated The Enchanter Heir (The Heir Chronicles, #4) in Books

I absolutely loved this book. The addition of the zombies/shades to this series makes it even better, making this book the perfect read for the month of October. There are enough mentions of the original characters from the series to make me happy, but not so much that you wouldn't understand the story without the first three (apart from the magical guilds). Unfortunately this is the first book in the heir series that leaves unresolved problems at the end, but at least we know there's another book coming.

Melody Womack (32 KP) rated Dr Seuss' The Lorax (2012) in Movies

One of my all time favorites!

I have always loved the original Lorax book and movie (which was essentially just an animated reading of the book, ) so I was really excited when this version was released. I like Ted's story even though he was just a nameless boy in the books. The silliness of the story made it Catchy for children, which I feel helped get the message across. The animation was fun and the songs were super catchy. I've watched this movie at least 50 times.

Skwchance (13 KP) rated Mary Poppins Returns (2018) in Movies

Would have been better without Mary
I generally enjoyed the film and found the songs very in keeping with the original but I had a real issue with Emily Blunt's portrayal of Mary. She was too stern and her accent was horrible. She just made me dislike Mary Poppins and that is downright wrong.
The other characters were good and the kids were great, little George in particular. Also I was delighted when Dick Van Dyke turned up.
Its a good fun movie but Emily should never have been Mary Poppins.

Dave Clarke (51 KP) rated Don't Say It, Bring It in TV
Jun 21, 2019
Hosted by Irish comedian, Jason Byrne, this new gameshow brings the fun back to the streets. The gameshow, based on an original Spanish format, challenges people to bring back the answer to a question, but not to say it, in return for Jason's cash prizes. Filmed across the UK including - Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Weston-Super-Mare and Whitby - each unpredictable episode will see Jason pitch up in search of willing participants who, in turn, go off in search of items that are the answer to Jason's questions.

A Pleasant Surprise!
This film is an excellent adaptation of Stephen King's classic horror novel. As most know, this is not the first adaptation, but certainly the better of the two so far (hopefully Chapter Two will do the same).
While we all loved Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise the Clown, the original TV movie lacked depth and had several irritating plot holes. Splitting the story into two parts was an excellent choice, and has given moviegoers the chance to experience all IT has to offer.

One not to add to your list
Gave this Netflix original a go. A brother and sister team try to scam people who think they are being haunted. They take on more than they can handle at one creepy location where several girls were murdered.
Not a bad idea for a Horror film but this effort is slow, dull, low budget, without any real scares. Takes a different direction in the final act as well and left little explained really. Check out @The Gift (2000) instead.
