Gary Oldman's performance (1 more)
Fascinating story
Powerful
A very interesting film about Churchill during the Darkest hour. He was hastedly put in place as prime minister, had a King who doubted him and his own war cabinet wanted to explore peace talks as the Germans advance on Dunkirk.
Gary Oldman will surely win the best Actor award at the Oscars for his amazing performance. This peek behind the scenes in the war rooms and Churchill in general at such an important point in the war is fascinating.

"Jules Dassin’s tour of the London underworld glistens with inky blacks, swirls of smoke, pockets of isolated light, a mise-en-scène broken into Mondrianesque squares, and stunning performances by Francis L. Sullivan, Googie Withers, a Greek wrestler named Zbyszko, and, in the defining performance of a career that ought to get one of those sorry-we-overlooked-you lifetime-achievement Oscars, Richard Widmark, who indulges a brief moment of elation by hurtling a stair railing to affect an incongruous pose of Chaplinesque delight."

One of the greatest onscreen partnerships of all time! This is Butch and Sundance in pinstripes. A film with a plot, endless character and charm, and if not the greatest twist of all time, then one that is definitely in the conversation. It deservedly won 7 Oscars, including costume and music – two details that really make it stand out. Interestingly, Redford was nominated, but Newman was not! Whilst gloriously sinister bad guy Robert Shaw was ignored completely. I have yet to meet anyone who saw this that didn’t enjoy it. An almost perfect film.
