"To use another alcohol metaphor, owning the Criterion DVD of Ernst Lubitsch’s endlessly effervescent 1932 masterpiece is like being able to uncork and savor the same bottle of expensive champagne over and over again. A love triangle among social-climbing riffraff and upper-class beauties (call it “The Thief, the Pickpocket, and the Perfume Executive”), with Herbert Marshall torn between the beautiful Miriam Hopkins and the stunning Kay Francis, Trouble in Paradise has the great advantage of being made before the Code. It’s as frank and scintillating as it is urbane and surprisingly touching, and it’s one of the rare American screen comedies to be completely comfortable with European sophistication. Peter Bogdanovich’s video introduction lucidly explains the meaning of the “Lubitsch touch.”"

"My second favorite film, I would probably say my most favorite documentary of all time, is a film called Brother’s Keeper by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. Those are the same guys who did Paradise Lost and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Brother’s Keeper is this amazing film about a brother who was murdered, and it’s this omniscient journey as the murder gets uncovered and the investigation is happening. You know, they take one of the brothers to court, and the story just unfolds in front of you in a way that’s so twisted and bizarre and weird. This, for me, represents what a great documentary does. It just kind of unfolds in front of you in a way you can’t expect."

Great in the theater. Lackluster at home.
This is not a movie so much as it is an experience. The movie itself is not great. But if you get the chance to see it in a theater with a live cast performing at the same time the movie is playing and when audience participation is encouraged, this is hella fun. I used to spend most weekend nights in high school and college at the midnight showing of Rocky Horror at the local arthouse theater dressed in a bustier, getting panties, garter belt, thigh-high stockings, and high heels with all the other weirdos enjoying the hell out of the movie, live cast, and audience. I highly recommend the help of alcohol and/or chemical indulgences to enhance the experience. But maybe not an entire bottle of Sambuca as I did one nonmemorable evening.

The songs in the movie are fun to sing. Dancing to the Time Warp, as well. If you're lucky, the theater will also play music videos from Tim Curry's Fearless album Paradise Garage and I Do the Rock and Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell and Paradise by the Dashboard Light before the movie.

This is one of Susan Sarandon's first films. She and Barry Bostwick play the innocent couple Brad and (Dammit) Janet. And Tim Curry is a God in this movie.

I have such great memories of my time at as Rocky Horror fan back in the day. I hope many generations continue to enjoy this movie in the theater. It's a blast!
