This is a new period of history to me, and I loved learning about it and following the adventures of Jack (or Jag) Fiskardo.
The Thirty Years War appeared to me to be a period where everyone was fighting everyone else in Europe. Jack’s father is caught up in all this and is killed, swiftly followed by the apparent suicide of his mother. Jack flees, knowing that he has to get away, carrying a silver medal with a wolf on it.
Jack has a habit of falling on his feet, and then getting into trouble of one kind or another - so he doesn’t stay in any one place for long. In this book, he starts off in France, then on to Amsterdam, and then Germany.
It’s an intriguing, exciting book, and really readable. The ending has ensured that I’ll most definitely look out for the second book in this trilogy.

I absolutely loved this book. I’m usually not a fan of period pieces as they tend to drag on and be boring but the way this book was written I was sucked in from the first page. The attention to detail and the way the author described each character really brought the book alive. This is a great coming of age/witchcraft novel and it’s part of a series that makes it even better!

Ponderous retelling of the Christie novel.
This update of Agatha Christie's famous whodunnit certainly looks the part, and the who's who cast certainly give it their all. But for all its visual splendour, the film fails to really engage and is let down by plodding pace and bloated run time. Akin to watching a beautiful piece of antique furniture for two and a half hours.

A perfect Romantic Comedy for those who like dialog... Really nails the time period.... and a diner scene.
Way beyond quirky, but still interesting and relatable. This is one of those films that when it comes on TV I don't change the channel until the next commercial breaks the spell. It's great. For Meg Ryan, her best films are this one and Sleepless in Seattle.

Excellent Story
I read this book when I was a child, then later on as an adult. The story is rich in details about the time period. When my kids were growing up, it became tradition to read it through the month of December.
To me the story teaches that it's never too late to have a change in heart, to learn to appreciate those around us.

Another accessible, well-written, clear book from John Ashdown-Hill which sets out to myth-bust everything you think you knew about the 'Princes in the Tower' - including why that title is a misnomer. Felt a little sad as John passed away earlier this year (2018) as I looked forward to each contribution he made to this period of history. I will certainly re-read his books with pleasure - thank you John.
