Anna Steele (111 KP) rated The Greatest Showman (2017) in Movies
May 20, 2018
My dad won’t stop watching this movie
I saw it when I first came out. Good date movie, but my boyfriend and I agreed that while the music is very good, it does not fit the time period of the story being told. Especailly the song “Never Enough”, the renoun surrounding the greatest soprano in Europe and she’s singing a simplistic pop ballad when she should be singing an aria. I love Pasek and Paul, and I think the cinematography is amazing and I love the blocking in the song between Efron and Jackman. But the verisimilitude was not there because of the incongruity of the songs and the story.

Awix (3310 KP) rated The Live Ghost (1934) in Movies
Feb 23, 2019
Okay mid-period Laurel and Hardy short. Stan and Ollie are hired by regular antagonist Walter Long to help kidnap men to crew his allegedly-haunted ship; perhaps inevitably, they end up press-ganging themselves. Better not mention the ghost to the captain...
About as close to over-plotted as you can get with a L&H movie; some good stuff near the start but it gets a bit busy as it goes on - too much story, not enough slapstick. Concludes by recycling the (slightly gruesome) closing gag from the same year's Going Bye-Bye! Has its moments, but not as many as some other films from the boys.

Ande Thomas (69 KP) rated Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) in Movies
May 30, 2019
Wow. I don't know what I just experienced but I know I want to do it again. In the opening sequence, Valerie experiences her first period. Almost immediately, her entry into adulthood is mired with otherworldly interactions with her crush, Eaglet, and the menacing, vampiric "Polecat."
It's certainly not the most linear of tales, but it is gorgeously shot, the score is wonderful, and the entire cast is spot on. I was hard-pressed to find a moment where I could look away, so much was happening in such seemingly still shots. I need to watch it again if for no other reason than to grasp what just happened on screen.

In full on 1950s fashion but with an end of the world flare this 2007 film will steal your heart. The misogyny portayed is typical of the time period, but i found myself cheering Carrie Ann Moss on as she decided to stand up for herself. And young Timmy when he gets in trouble Fido either saves the day, or when it was too hard for him he runs home to get mom. And just like in Lassie there is the whole "What is it boy? Is Timmy in trouble?" Dialogue throughout contains a treasure trove of quotable lines.

B (62 KP) rated The 10th Kingdom - Season 1 in TV
Nov 2, 2018
First of all, being a fan of BBC period dramas, I absolutely love the genre of the TV mini-series. And The 10th Kingdom is one of my all-time favorite. I remember watching it our recorded copy on video cassette (hard to believe its that old ?) as a child and I'm pretty sure that it was the source of my fascination with fairy tales. The special effects are actually surprisingly good. It's a pity that it took them so long to make this first series because it would have been interesting to learn about some of the other kingdoms in the second "book." Overall, such an amazing cult classic ?

Jena (9 KP) rated Coming Home (The Toki-Girl and the Sparrow-Boy #1) in Books
Oct 20, 2019 (Updated Oct 20, 2019)
Amazing details
The book was given to me free by Voracious Readers Only and Claire Youmans. I genuinely enjoyed the book, it was different to my usual genre of books generally of the Stephen King and Dan Browns like.
But Claire Youmans portrayal of the characters drew me in so I needed to know what happened to Azuki and Shota in the end

James Koppert (2698 KP) rated This Is England (2007) in Movies
Dec 3, 2019 (Updated Dec 3, 2019)
British classic
Unless it's a comedy, British films often don't get the recognition they deserve. This did. Friends in the State's were messeging me saying they have seen it.
The unscripted acting was warm when it needed to be and tense when it needed to be. It shine a light on Thatcher's Britain, divided and angry, a but like today. It's not always easy to watch but at the same time there is recognition of anyone who lived through this period.
So good it spawned a TV series, This Is England is one of Britain's best.
