I am always fascinated with any novel, fiction or otherwise, that is set in the time of World War II. This book took me a bit longer to get in to than is typical of a book set in this time period. But the end made it well worth the wait.
At times it is hard to follow because it bounces back & forth between Boise's life currently & her childhood spent in a small village in France during WWII. The story itself didn't form fully for me until it ended...all the loose ends were tied up & the events up to that point finally made sense. The 1 thing that frustrated me was Mirabelle, the mother. I was left not being quite sure whether or not she was really crazy.

I won this book awhile back on goodreads. I finally got around to reading it & have to say that I wasn't overly impressed. The book got off to a slow start. It got more interesting but not until I was into the second half of the novel.
The characters are very well written. I had a hard time connecting with Percival the Manu character however. The setting alternated between China & Vietnam in the time period of the Cultural Revolution & the Vietnam War. The story didn't really flow until Percival's son was arrested by the silent police for staging a "protest" in an attempt to impress his father who was headmaster of an American school in Cholon.
The book was well written, don't get me wrong! I just couldn't get into the story itself.

FELT like the book
The cast was amazing
Details were there, but hinted at
I liked the movie as a whole. Not really "scary" more creepy. One thing though, this movie was much less like the book than the original movie... without any BIG spoilers...
Mild Book to Movie Spoilers:

Changes right off the bat include, obviously the time period, no fort building scene, Georgie's body wasn't found by the sewer, most of the ways the kids first meet IT, they don't say "beep beep Richie"... (aside from once)
There are much bigger changes I can't mention here.
SPOILER END...

All in all, I did really enjoy it! It definitely felt like the book. Better than the original in many ways. I'm looking forward to the second one!
