Yet another faction enters the picture, but Raith and Nox are not prepared to take anything at face value these days. They learn the answers to some questions whilst more arise. Ambry regains consciousness, but I'm still not sure she's the one for Raith. Luckily for me, the main arc of this story was Raith and Nox, not the budding romance, so that worked out perfectly for me.
The finale is breathtaking and perfect for the story so far. The epilogue left me with a huge smile on my face. I won't say more as you really should read it for yourself.
Full of action and humour between Raith and Nox, plus some heart-rending moments, this was the perfect ending to the series and highly recommended by me.

There is plenty of atmosphere in this book and the excellent descriptions of the Lakes countryside only add to this. I really liked the characters and am keen to find out more about DI Chambers' back story and watching the developing friendship between her and Margot and between Chambers and her small team.
The mystery of who the killer was kept me guessing and there were enough twists to keep me returning. I liked the different points of view which helped to give a rounded picture from Chambers', Margot's and the killers point of view.
Overall, a really successful start to a series and one I am looking forward to reading the next.

I should say, I'm UK based, so the 1812 war between Canada and the US is not really one I know anything about. Therefore, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the details in this book.
What I can comment on, though, is the story between Zee and Jesse and their struggle to cope during this war. I loved them both, together and apart. They are both strong people, emotionally, do deal with such a difficult time, and to come out the other side.
It's beautifully written, from both Zee and Jesse's POV. There are wonderful descriptions of the scenery in that part of the world. I really enjoyed trying to picture them.
It has some lighter moments, but some darker ones too. There was much that made me cry.
I haven't read anything by this author before, A quick look shows her books seem to be about couples in settings with a war backdrop. I'd like to read more from this author.
