"I enjoy reading epic stories from ancient history and in recent years have been reading abridged versions aloud to my kids. This epic poem was found on a series of ancient tablets from Mesopotamia written down over 4,000 years ago, and involves the central character Gilgamesh, an excessive and oppressive leader, and his arduous journey in pursuit of the secrets of immortality. His character evolves through his personal voyage towards accepting death, and you encounter so many tales that you recognize from history."

"Quiet and gentle, in stark contrast to the ever-looming violence of The Wages of Fear, this human tone poem by Ermanno Olmi has the intimate lyricism of Truffaut layered with Italian neorealism. It is toward this latter strain that Olmi moved in his subsequent work, even to the extent of being his own (albeit mediocre) camera operator; for this film, the fluid camera of Lamberto Caimi creates a near dreamlike space while staying rooted in the details of daily life."

"I could pick loads of Super Furry Animals and their assorted other albums. I really loved Cian’s [Ciaran] album from last year, Outside In. But Radiator has ‘Demons’, it has ‘Down A Different River’ and ‘Mountain People’ which I think is the best exploration of Welshness ever written in a song. It’s almost a poem put to music. I think they’re one of our favourite bands full stop. They’re unbelievably talented and I wish they would come back together and tour with us."

Thoughts: THE GUILT GENE is Diana’s memoir in poetry. Her life was filled with excitement, pain, loss and gain. Her words are beautiful and lyric and demand to be read several times over, not just once. Many times while reading this book I read the same poem over several times, just so I could hear it again. Her story is a sad but hopeful one, and something I believe everyone should read.

Recommendation: Ages 12+
