Stunning poetry but unrelated to the Classics
Anne Carson is definitely among the class of rare poets, seen in this work which takes you on a journey through the medium of words. That being said, I was hoping for something a little more in time with the classical world it invokes. Despite the characters being called Geryon and Herakles, they have little in common with their mythical namesake.
Carson leaves most traces of classicism behind. That isn't necessarily bad, but it begs the question of why she uses these myths in the first place. Nevertheless, the poetry is solid and evocative, so read it without the mythologies in mind.

It’s farce and poetry both, able to make thrilling gearshifts from poignant characterisation into madcap as the film spills onto the streets to create chase sequences worthy of Chuck Jones or Fred Quimby.

Eleanor Luhar (47 KP) rated A Light in the Attic. Poems and Drawings by Shel Silverstein in Books
Jun 24, 2019
I recently decided that I need to read some poetry books, and this happens to be the one that I started with. I'm also planning on reading another of Silverstein's collections, The Giving Tree. I don't really know all that much about poets or poetry, so I may have just searched Goodreads for high-rated books...
Silverstein often uses prominent, simply rhyme schemes throughout this book of poetry, making them easy to follow and popular with younger children/teens. They flow beautifully, almost rhythmically, and are all rather short. They are mostly humourous poems, with little illustrations alongside them. These illustrations, also by Shel Silverstein, are also often funny, and help us understand the point/joke being made in the related poem.
These are all pretty easy-reading poems, nothing too thought-provoking or hard to understand. Quite a nice book to read in bed, or when you just have a little time to relax. There are definitely poems in here that remind me of stories and poems from my early childhood. I think I can give his 4 stars quite easily.

I instantly loved this book. It's a collection of love poems with the feel of free-verse poetry. Some of them are sad, others are sweet, still others are affectionate. But all of them resonate with passion and intimacy. This would be a perfect valentines gift for that special someone!

Fatimah Asghar's poetry in If They Come For Us is everything I hoped it would be. It was raw and powerful. Her words paint her world and pull on your emotions. Her verses gave me chills and left me breathless. I particularly fell in love with My Love For Nature.
