Eleanor (1463 KP) rated Cold Granite (Logan McRae #1) in Books

Gritty Police procedural.
If you are not going to manage with descriptions of horrendous crimes committed against young children though I would step away from this one.
Listening to the audio of this book narrated by Steve Worsley felt a lot like curling up in front of the TV to watch a post-watershed BBC police procedural series set in Scotland. If you like a good dark down to earth police procedural then this may well be up your alley.
Logan McRae is just returning to work following sustaining horrific injuries in the line of duty and is thrown straight back into the thick of it when the mutilated body of a young boy is discovered. Numerous threads, involving various cases and a smattering of personal life then intertwine to give a very solid down to earth police procedural. OK, I could of done with Logan being a bit less obsessed with every bit of leg he saw but for the time and place set probably fairly accurate…
First in a long-running series and as there's not much on the TV at the minute I'm on board for more of these

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2072 KP) rated Catering to Nobody (A Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The first in the series, caterer Goldy Bear is upset when her former father-in-law is poisoned at a funeral she is catering. When the police shut her down, she starts digging to find out who did it. I thought the characters were well formed and interesting, but the plot moved a little slow and I had some trouble believing how much the police told her.

I love Karin Slaughter and the Will Trent novels in general but this wasn't my favourite. As an ex-police officer myself I did enjoy Amanda's and Evelyn's story as female police officers in the US in the 70's. I could see it in my minds eye and found it believable. We finally find out the truth about Trent's parents and how he ended in the care system and why Amanda sought him out to join the GBI many years later. All in all a solid story.

Movie Critics (823 KP) rated Zodiac (2007) in Movies
Sep 28, 2017
What makes "Zodiac" authentic is the way it avoids chases, shootouts, grandstanding and false climaxes, and just follows the methodical progress of police work.
