David McK (3649 KP) rated Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) (2025) in Movies
Aug 26, 2025 (Updated Aug 26, 2025)
It also has Pedro Pascal in the lead role as Mr Fantastic alongside Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (and with Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn rounding out the family as The Thing and Johnny Storm respectively), with the film starting with the Fantastic Four already in possession of their powers; already established as mainstream (and popular) superheroes.
And about to face the threat of Galactus, the Destroyer of Worlds, just as Sue is about to give birth to her first child,
I must admit, I did struggle a bit with the casting of Pedro Pascal as Mr Fantastic - to me, he will always by Djinn Djarijn, the Mandalorian of the Disney+ series of the same name.
I also felt the resolution to be a bit on the weak side!
Still, it's nice to see something different in the MCU once in a while.

The Bird King is the story of Fatima, concubine, and Hassan, mapmaker, on the run from the Inquisition. They were both members of the house of the last Sultan in Iberia. When the Spanish (and the Inquisition) came to negotiate his surrender, one of their conditions was they wanted Hassan, because of the magic he used in his maps. Hassan has been Fatima's only real friend; he's the only man that wanted nothing from her, because he's gay and unmoved by her beauty. His sexuality has been largely ignored by the court; his maps were too important to the war effort, so it was tolerated and just not spoken of. When Fatima discovers the Sultan intends to turn Hassan over, she runs away with him. She has some unexpected help in her journey, which, along with Hassan's mapmaking, makes this a kind of magical realist historical fantasy novel. It's not really alternate history, because nobody's actions change how history plays out on a large scale. You can find all my reviews at http://goddessinthestacks.com
James Koppert (2698 KP) rated The Anomaly in Books

A group of filmmakers who look for answers into the paranormal and conspiracy go to the grand canyon to hunt for the legendary Kincaid's Cave first printed about in 1909 (Google it). There have been numerous expeditions in just over a century to try and discover said cave to see if it's real and what it holds, all unsuccessful, but in the novel there has just been a minor earthquake and the team find the cave. What happens next is a proper out there thrilling adventure of life and death, incredible conspiracies, and potentially the apocalypse. This was so much fun and gripping enough to keep you turning the page to see what happens next. It will be too out there for some but for me it was on the side of crazy I enjoy. Can't wait for The Possession, the next in the series
