Autumn is in the air, which means it's time for a change - at least according to the authors in this month's crop of new releases.

"A brilliant Pulitzer Prize-winning book about how the modern world was formed, analyzing how societies developed differently on different continents. I like how this is written from a biologist’s point of view rather than purely based on history or anthropology."

"Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel fulfilled me deeply as a lover of period piece romances. Her characters showed me early on that love is as much a choice as it is a feeling, and the pull of family, society and tradition can be overbearing."

"I love sonnets, with their iambic pentameter. This collection has most of her best-known works, but my favorite “I Shall Go Back Again to the Bleak Shore,” is in her Selected Poems edition. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923, only the third woman to do so. All her life she was an activist for women’s rights."

The finalists for the 2017 National Book Awards have arrived.

The National Book Awards serve roughly the same function in the book world that the Oscars do in the movie world. Pulitzer-winner Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach was widely reviewed and much discussed, but although it was on the longlist for fiction, it didn’t advance to the final round.

"It was hard to choose which Maya Angelou work I wanted to include in this list, but I ultimately decided I wanted the one that her most definitive. This is the book that made her a voice to be heard. I was also tempted to include her book of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie, for which she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize."

Deeply moving, the horrors of separation
A well deserved Pulitzer Prize for Hisham Matar, who writes bravely about the terrible experiences his family faced under the Gaddafi regime and not knowing the fate of his diplomat father. It is gripping and terrifying to read how easy it was for the authorities to arrest and kill Libyans at will even on foreign soil and the complicity of western countries that allowed it to happen. Truly a harrowing and stirring read.

For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. (0 more)
For my all time favorite silver screen movie, Harvey is a mix of beautiful comedy mixed with a good helping of heart. The story follows the lovable Elwood P. Dowd and his best friend, Harvey who never makes a physical appearance on screen but is never-the-less always felt. Stewart puts forth a beautiful and lighthearted (but somehow still touching) performance, the the surrounding cast never disappoints as they move through the film adaptation of this Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
