Rolling Stone's 469th greatest album of all time
What a belter of an album. Ready or Not, No Woman No Cry and Killing Me Softly are superb and should be played on the radio more. But the rest of the album is wonderful too. Lauryn Hill has a brilliant voice, both for singing and some top notch raps, and Wyclef Jean has one of the most distinctive voices out there. A great collection of songs.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. The opinions are entirely my own, and any quotes are taken from the ARC and may be different in the final published copy.

It is no secret I am proud to be from Philly. I love the people, the sports, the arts, and the energy. Philadelphia is not perfect, but if you want to get my attention, set a novel in my city. I will read it. Michael Bradley, a southern Jersey native, set his third novel in Philly and combined his knowledge of the area and radio broadcasting to write Dead Air: A Novel of Suspense.

Kaitlyn Ashe, a radio DJ in Philadelphia, receives anonymous letters that threaten the life she built for herself. That life hides secrets she does not want to be revealed but, when the letters escalate, her fiance insists on calling the police. Kaitlyn needs to figure out who knows about the Shallows before her life crashes down around her, and her secrets revealed.

Rachel Fulginiti, an Audie-nominated narrator and veteran of the stage, skillfully narrates the audiobook, allowing us to hear Kaitlyn's "radio voice" and her normal voice. You can imagine Rachel is Kaitlyn conveying the story to us.

I found the audiobook a little slow to listen to at 1.0 speed. Philadelphians do not talk slowly so I played it at a more comfortable, higher rate.

This 200-word review was published on Philomathinphila.com on 8/5/20.

Great Christmas Horror anthology
I came across this last year and didn't expect much as a straight to DVD film. It turned out to be a little gem of a film. Mixing up various horror types from Slasher, Ghost story, mythical and the plain weird. All linked together by William Shatner as the small town local radio DJ. Reminded me of @Trick 'r Treat (2007) something for everyone, check it out.

"This was one of the earliest tapes I ever had. It had The Four Seasons, oldies, doo wop and stuff. When I finally had a radio in my room when I was 9 or 10, I’d listen to this station in New York called 101.1 which just played oldies. I’d listen all night, waiting to hear “Dream Lover” or “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. These epic songs of the ’50s and ’60s were the first songs I got obsessed with."

I would have said I was a massive REM fan, but I can honestly say I had never listened to this album in total before now. Radio Free Europe is a brilliant song, and the rest is all typical early REM style if a little forgettable. Quite surprising because I always thought of REM as an albums band, where they had high quality songs throughout the album, but not so here.

Again, I listened to the BBC radio play for this book and again it did not disappoint. I love it when there can be plays of the books because the actors get really into it and the sound effects make it that much more fun. I do want to, at some point, go back and read the physical copies of the books, but this is doing just fine!

I love Pippin, he will forever be my favorite, but all of the characters in these books are so compelling. It is really fun to read the godfather of modern fantasy and see how much of what he wrote is influencing the books written today. I can say that this is my favorite genre of all and I could not be any more pleased to be reading these books. I just have to wait until my library has the last book opened up and I will be reading that so fast!

Honestly though, so good. If you have the chance, listen to the radio plays. They are very well produced and just phenomenal!

"It was on the radio, I was just getting it, I was thinking, 'Fuck, what is that? Who is that?', it was so different. I would say 'Black, Brown and White' is my favourite song. It was played on BBC radio, and at the time - he said it himself - that he couldn't record it in America, so I think he recorded it in France, because they said it's too controversial. Even black friends of his said, 'Don't you stir up the shit here! We could get repercussions.' But I thought he put it... He was just stating a fact. He wasn't saying 'you white bastards' or 'the whites won't let us', he wasn't saying anything like that. It's just 'me and a man was working side by side, this is what it meant, they were paying him a dollar an hour and they were paying him 50 cents'. You know, he said, 'If you're white, you're alright, if you're brown stick around, but if you're black, get back.' Which I thought was tremendous."

Turn on, tune in, don’t touch that dial
I mean, I saw Eddie Marsans name and the movie gets an instant 3 bombs. But I was even happier to find the movie was engaging as hell.

A radio DJ on the grave yard shift is about to have the worst night of his life as his show is taken hostage by armed gunman who want his deepest secrets exposed live on air in a moment that could destroy his career.

"Let’s go with Elephant Man — no, I’m going to go with Blue Velvet, for my David Lynch pick. I’m going to go with Blue Velvet because I love Roy Orbison so much. He was a great influence on me musically, and still is. That’s when I kind of put two and two together — with Blue Velvet — and thought, film is a great way for your music to be heard, without radio. It’s a great way for your music to be heard."

"Just read this instead of reading about it. Almost nobody gets how simple it is. It's not about TV or radio. McLuhan's saying that everything is a medium. We keep looking at subjects, but we miss the field or medium in which the subject is operating. We see the "figure" but not the "ground." He's trying to teach pattern recognition, lateral thinking, and to bring people into a peer-to-peer, Medieval, Burning Man sensibility. It's nothing like Wired magazine in there."
