Private investigator Kinsey Millhone is feeling a bit restless when Lieutenant Conrad Dolan walks into her new office. Eighteen years ago, in 1969, he and his friend, Stacey Oliphant, found the body of a young woman. Both men have pursued the case over their careers with the police, but they haven’t figure out who she was. They want to take one more look at it, and they want to hire Kinsey to help them with the leg work. Will the three of them find any new leads in this cold case?
I’m sure it’s no surprise to say they do indeed begin to make some headway as they go back over the case. I enjoyed being along for the unpredictable ride. I thought I had things figured out a few times before we reached the real climax. The characters are as strong as ever. I loved seeing the growth in Kinsey, especially with a recurring sub-plot popping back up. There are a couple of other fun sub-plots with the regulars. Dolan and Oliphant could be a bit annoying at times, but that never lasted for very long. This book is based on a real-life Jane Doe, and there is information in the back on how Sue Grafton became interested in that case, which is still unsolved best I can tell. It’s always a pleasure to see a long running series that is still this strong and entertaining after so many volumes.

Unfortunate Fortune Teller Murdered
We are once again in August 1895 in Newport, Rhode Island. Emma Cross, society reporter for the local paper, has her morning interrupted when her distance cousin, Consuelo Vanderbilt calls begging for Emma to come over to Marble House. While Emma finds herself caught up in some family drama, the last thing she expects is that her visit will end in murder. But that’s just what happens when the fortune teller that Alva Vanderbilt has hired is found dead behind the estate. When a family member vanishes, Emma starts to investigate. Can she find out what happened?
This book picks up right after the last one ends. While it doesn’t spoil the murder itself, it does give away some ongoing storylines. The story presents an interesting mystery, but the pacing does get off at times. We get some developments in Emma’s personal life, and I’m not sure I’m on her side as much after some of what happened here. If I’m this opinionated, clearly, I’m finding the characters real, and that includes real people and fictional characters. Speaking of which, the author includes a bit about what is true and what she twisted to make her plot work, which I always appreciate. I read this book right after getting to visit Newport, which made it easier to picture some of the locations. I’m already wishing I’d had time to really explore the locations more when I was there. Overall, this is a good second entry, and I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

I love this author she always manages to make me smile while reading. This was set in a carnival environment which I also love reading it had an unlikely hero that came through despite his disability a plucky heroine and some werewolf action what’s not to love? Definitely recommend it took me an hour to fly through as I couldn’t put it down.

MY GRUMPY SWEETHEART is part of the Sweetheart Escapes series. It can be read as a standalone, but I read it after My Sweetheart Surprise, which has Bailey's friend, Parker, as one of the MCs.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, although I would have liked a little more background on Dakota. For example, what made him quit his city job? Why did he have anger issues (apart from the obvious?) Bailey is the kind of character I love to read about but would drive me insane in real life! 😂 Their differences worked though, and I loved seeing Dakota thaw. Bailey's bluntness was so refreshing and absolutely perfect.
One thing I have to mention - because I loved it SO much - is Dakota's reaction to his friends and their oh-so-good plan, plus when they arrive at the B-and-B. First off, it was a real sh!tty thing for them to do, and I completely understood where Dakota was coming from. I would have left the weekend too. And secondly, his reaction to the honeymoon suite. I mean, yes, it works perfectly for the story, but once again, I thought his reaction was perfect. Who would do that?!?!?
All in all, a great read that I definitely recommend and part of a series I want to read more of.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, although I would have liked a little more background on Dakota. For example, what made him quit his city job? Why did he have anger issues (apart from the obvious?) She also starts painting pictures of evil horrible demons in her sleep, and is forced to burn the pictures and ban them… but one demon escapes, and comes for her.
She finds out that he had been pursuing her in every life—she's been reincarnated? what?—and has killed her every time for the past 200+ years. She also finds out that she has a soul mate, (who jumped into the body that the demon had used to hurt her, and now she can't look at him without getting sick) but has hidden herself from him in almost every life, subconsciously, because of something that happened in the past. She and Ian set off to find answers and to kill the pig-faced demon… for good this time. But this time ends up being the most dangerous life she's ever lived.
Soul Catcher was an addicting read. I would have read it in one sitting if I'd been allowed. It actually stuck with me all night and I'm pretty sure I dreamed about it.
I liked the philosophy of the world that Livia lived in. There were soul jumpers, like Ian and Dante, who could jump into any body he needed to be in at the time. There were soul catchers like her, who could banish dark spirits and talk to the light ones. The plot itself was very complex, and every chapter added something new to the story. One thing that made Soul Catcher stand out was how Livia and Ian's love grew. It wasn't immediate you're-my-soul-mate-you're-perfect-for-me kind of love. It was a lot more real than that. Livia starts by trying to avoid him at all costs, but ends up having to go on a trip with him to find out about their pasts. You could say they "bonded," or you could say that Ian finally got to her—even while he was in the body she hated passionately—either way, their love was real enough to be believable.
I really liked Livia, even though she had her downfalls and her insecurities. She was definitely the bad-ass heroine we know and love: slightly sarcastic, very obnoxious, stubborn as an ox, and head over heels in love but unwilling to admit it because she sees it as a weakness. Ian was a great character: he'd have to be to put up with Livia. He'd do anything for her, is dying for her to love him, thinks she is the most beautiful girl in the world—and even bends so low as to trick her into kissing him (she didn't appreciate that.). But he's all light-hearted, fun to be around, with a sexy Irish accent.
I really liked the ending. The whole story had good humor and good comic relief, but the ending was sweet, cute, and funny. It pulled everything together nicely, and left you with a smirk on your face. I say take it to the beach with an umbrella and lemonade. Or whatever other drink you like best.
Content/recommendation: some sex and sexual references, heavy language, ages 18+
