I'm not having much luck with books lately. The last couple of young adult books I've started just haven't managed to grab my attention at all and I've DNF'd them. This one included.

DNF @ 22%

It didn't pull me in and make me want to forget everything else. The characters weren't in my face real and the continual chapter/character changes got a little annoying after a while. The underwater world held no appeal for me while I was more bothered about what was going on with Ashlyn above ground and then I'd read some and kinda lose interest in that but too.

I could really do with a book that's going to pull me in completely.

"La Jetée is probably the most powerful example of the use of still photography in cinema. It is a real landmark achievement in the world of low-budget filmmaking, produced primarily through the use of still photos and voice-over narration. Its limitations enhance the dramatic effect of the film, especially in its haunting final frames. I’ve always felt like so much great cinema is storytelling through memories, and here is a perfect example in possibly its purest form (another great example would be Memento, by Christopher Nolan). Similarly, Sans Soleil documents Marker’s journey through Japan, adding his travelogue notes as voice-over narration. A hypnotic and powerful film in its own right."

"I’m a big kid, I’m a kid at heart, so I still love the classic family films, such as the great Warner Bros film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory — not the remake, but the original. It’s still one of the best movies, hands down, ever made, and of course that goes back to the ingenuity of the characters and the storyline. [Producer] David Wolper did such an amazing job bringing it to life, and Gene Wilder gave such an amazing performance. The songs, the music, the colors, the scope — it was just brilliant and really lead you to a fantasy world that didn’t exist, but that we could all imagine was real."

So many exclamations!!!! (0 more)
A good story about a teen who recently lost her dad and copes with her grief by joining Raven the trickster of the NW US and Canada. They go on an journey to heal the lay lines of the world in the far near future.
I'd recommend it for kids that are wanting something YA but aren't ready for the mature sex and violence that is typical for most YA whose protagonist is 15 or older. Not that there isn't some hard discussions or danger. Mostly the biggest thing about it is the MC likes to think and sometimes talk in exclamations! It gets a bit tiring accurate or not.
