Emma @ The Movies (1786 KP) rated The Mummy (2017) in Movies
Sep 25, 2019
Before my week off I managed to squeeze in a screening of The Mummy before whizzing home. I was a little bit on the come down from stress, but I don't think it massively changed my mind that I was confused by this movie. I really wish everyone had left off with the "it's a reboot" thing. Say it's a reimagining of the mummy monster movie, but saying it's a reboot really makes you want to compare to the original, and quite frankly, every mummy movie is a bad knock off of the original. I liked some of it... That's as enthusiastic as I can get about it. The ending for me was too bizarre. And afterwards when I looked into it leading in to the Dark Universe... well, I wept a little for classic monster movies.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Josie and the Pussycats Vol. 2 in Books

The second volume of the new Josie and the Pussycats iteration wasn't all that great. Again, the same writer, but it felt off. Overall, I kind of felt like the issues were weak. The only character I haven't liked in the reboot is Alan. He's kind of a super-douche and I'm not into it.
After reading this volume, I don't think I'll read any further.

After hearing such mixed reviews, I went in with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. I thought this reboot really did the original justice, bringing a self-awareness to the conceit that the franchise has always had.
Mark Hamill was great, Aubrey Plaza makes a pretty convincing mom, and Chucky's got jokes. What more did you really want?

I was skeptical about the reboot of this show as a drama, but I gave it a chance and I'm glad it did. It's well done and Jabari Banks shines as Will. The entire cast is great and before I knew it I had watched all of the current available episodes. The story is great and it left me wanting to know more. Overall, really well done.

Charles Burbridge (13 KP) rated Tomb Raider (2018) in Movies
Mar 26, 2018
Brass tacks, if you enjoyed the reboot Tomb Raider games, you'll like this film. If you dislike them, you probably won't like the film. If you haven't played them? *shrugs* I'm not sure, because I'm a big fan of the reboot games.
Admittedly, the movie plods a bit in the second act, and the third act wasn't as big of a set piece as I would have liked, but all in all, I enjoyed it. Tomb Raider didn't exceed my expectations, but it also didn't disappoint me. It's a perfectly acceptable way to spend two hours, and if Lynn wants to catch it I'll go back for a second viewing.
Reviewing average films is difficult, because there's not much to say. That's the where I am now. 6/10, with the recommendation that the film will be much better in a theater than at home.

Lee KM Pallatina (951 KP) rated Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) in Movies

Who ya gonna reboot?
Ghostbusters afterlife was announced with original director Jason reitman returning sending fans into a frenzy after the lackluster 2016 "reboot" ghostbusters: answer the call left viewers with a bad taste in their mouth and an empty ghost trap.
It's been 32 years since the apocalyptic events of the first movie and the original ghostbusters are all but completely forgotten.
After the death of egon, his estranged daughter and her children move into his home and try to settle in before pieces of the past start to uncover and an old threat is unleashed... So someone makes a call.
Fantastic visual effects, original soundtrack, a huge dose of nostalgia and a beautiful emotional scene that packs a punch that really kick things into gear.
This is a truly worthy sequel not to be missed and features cameos from the original cast.

Against All Odds
The original Tomb Raider was one of the main inspiration behind the Uncharted series and now the rebooted Tomb Raider series is taking influence from Uncharted. This is a great reboot and really takes you on a treacherous trail of survival. The set pieces are great, the voice actors are well used and the desperate tone of the game is felt throughout.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Batgirl, Vol. 1: The Darkest Reflection in Books
Feb 25, 2018
I'm a huge fan (maybe one of the only) of the new 52 DC reboot. Barbara Gorden is the main reason. Babs has her legs again! She's no longer Oracle, and she's Batgirl again. Batgirl was my first favorite superhero, after watching the 1960s Batman show. She was a librarian, and she had the cool motorcycle.
Gail Simone script is excellent in this volume, and I quickly demolished her Batgirl arc.
