Terry Gilliam emerges victorious from his epic battle to the death with Miguel Cervantes' famous novel. Not quite the movie he famously never finished making with Johnny Depp, nearly twenty years ago, but a subtly different tale of a film director finding himself entangled in different versions of the Quixote story and, perhaps, looking for redemption.

After a slow and rambling start the film eventually becomes a charming, funny, and occasionally thrilling and moving adaptation (sort of) of the book - if it's picaresque and episodic, that's the nature of Quixote. The knowing wit and intelligence of the novel survive too. Strong performances, visually very impressive - the fact the film exists at all is remarkable, let alone that it's this good. Very reminiscent of Gilliam's movies from the 1980s: hugely imaginative, narratively chaotic, very individual, and equally easy to like.

"I admired the fierce honesty in the single-mindedly feminist world-view of this book. It breaks many of the ‘rules’ of fiction. Walker comes close to painting all the men in a simplistic shade of ‘bad,’ although she attempts to give the nameless husband of Celie some redemption in the end. But the reader senses that a greater truth is at stake; that this was a story that needed to be told. I liked how Celie becomes strong with the love of Shug. And how Sofia is amazingly resilient but is punished for sassing the mayor, and later has to go and work for the mayor’s wife. I applauded Celie’s sexual awakening. And, most of all, I liked the idea that God gets angry if we walk past a field with the colour purple and don’t notice it."

I hate giving poor reviews, but I'm not left with many options here. Most of the acting was average at best and at times outright hollow. The CGI used for the animals was pretty atrocious given the tech that's currently available and generally used in this type of movie. I understand that there was a giant blockbuster budget available, but the level of dodgy production is unacceptable at any budget. I'm usually fine with films who use sound and music throughout to add to the feel and suspense of the theme but the sounds and music used here did nothing to help. They actually did the opposite. Often ill timed and almost always a poor choice for the circumstances.

I'm able to forgive the lack of originality if that dearth is made up for otherwise. Sadly, there was no redemption found here.
