I didn't enjoy this quite as much as Ian's story. Ian had a sort of cocky inner voice and a way of coming across that I really loved. No offense to our hot geek but I didn't get as good a vibe from him. But then again this being written in dual POV made their relationship growth a lot easier to follow.

I did enjoy this a lot though and look forward to reading more books by the author.

Sensual and full of passion, Skye Warren makes it easy to fall head over heels in love with her characters. Blake is no exception; he's sweet and thoughtful, but just mysterious enough to be sexy. Erin is a smart, independent, unusually mature woman who refuses to be a damsel in distress. Their relationship is a turbulent one, yet you can't help but root for them both. I'm excited to read the next book and see how they grow together.

2.5 stars.

I can't say I ever really gelled with this story, I struggled with it from the start but it was only after the half way point when it went from 3 star (like) to a 2 star (okay). I lost interest with the hot and cold routine on Macklin's side and then when it finally got around to the sex I more or less skipped it because their relationship had lost all interest for me.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Bernard Cornwell adaptations.

I (generally) like his books.

I've yet to encounter a good adaptation, with the possible exception of the 90s Sharpe series (with Sean Bean), although those definitely needed a bigger budget!

This is loosely based on Cornwell's 'Warlord' trilogy - The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur - which Cornwell himself views as his best works.

They're a 'realistic' retelling of the Arthurian stories, basically.

<2024 update>

It's been a few years since I last read this, with the added time between now adding (to me) additional depth to the character of The Moidart and to Gaise Macon's often fractured relationship with him.

<original review>

The final book in the Rigante series and, while it may not be as good as the others, it still nicely round off the series. The blurb on the back of the book is a bit misleading, though ...
