"Simpson describes a complex mother-daughter relationship with brilliant complexity and unflinching honesty. She also does a remarkable job capturing a sense of place, whether the setting is Wisconsin or Los Angeles."

Unusual, descriptive, horrors of war
While I feel a lot of the descriptions about the genocide of Native Americans was grotesque, Barry's other descriptions was rich and beautiful especially describing the relationship between John and Thomas. It is a love story within the context of war. It is uncommon because it describes a homosexual relationship in a very natural way and also talks about the protagonist's desire to be a woman in terms of the historic backdrop.

The setting of this book being in Scotland drew me in right away. Not only did Magill do a fabulous job with the scenery but she seemed to capture the soul of the Scottish people. The relationship between the characters of Bryce and Reggie is something of an enigma that will keep you guessing until the end. The relationship that develops between Bryce and Fiona ages just like a fine scotch. This book was truely a pleasure to read.

A quick read featuring Cree and Brock. Brock is a former boxer with a crush on Cree but he believes her to be in a relationship already so hands off. Cree has a crush on Brock but can't gather enough nerve to approach him and take it further. After the miscommunication works itself out, they realize they both are interested in pursuing a relationship. 3 1/2 stars for this novella in the Seaside Summers series.
