James Koppert (2698 KP) rated Ghosts of War (2020) in Movies

Spooktacular
I am unsure as to why Ghosts of War is receiving less fanfare than other films out at the moment. It is certainly heads above the other deluge of horror films out this year so far. The film and its setting does have a great amount of creeps and chills and thats from someone who leads a group of investigators who go in people's homes when they are about to flee as they cant take it anymore. However I fear the low rating on various reviews is due to the ending. Without giving away any spoilers, it does somewhat change the films journey and direction but does give one something to think about. I for one enjoyed it.

I hate giving poor reviews, but I'm not left with many options here. Most of the acting was average at best and at times outright hollow. The CGI used for the animals was pretty atrocious given the tech that's currently available and generally used in this type of movie. I understand that there was a giant blockbuster budget available, but the level of dodgy production is unacceptable at any budget. I'm usually fine with films who use sound and music throughout to add to the feel and suspense of the theme but the sounds and music used here did nothing to help. They actually did the opposite. Often ill timed and almost always a poor choice for the circumstances.
I'm able to forgive the lack of originality if that dearth is made up for otherwise. Sadly, there was no redemption found here.

Well acted (1 more)
House looks very creepy
Hauntingly good
Finally got around to watching this after hearing good reviews. It can be tricky to make a TV series that is scary for 10 episodes. This does a very good job.
The atmosphere is very good and generally goes for an eerie, creepy feeling with a few jump scares. The child cast were very good, although it took a couple of episodes to work out which Adult was playing the grown up version. It's quite intelligently done with how it links events from the past and present from different perspectives. Finishes nicely bringing everything to an end. The last 2 episodes didn't really the impact I hoped for. However series as a whole was very good. Worth checking out for Halloween.

To echo other reviews, yes, the book is vastly different from the film. To be honest, I prefer the film.
I like Alice Hoffman as an author in general, but you can definitely tell this was an earlier book. It follows the Owens women, and their various doomed lovers. You can tell there are so many books written after this one that took inspiration from it.
Again, I can't help but compare it to the film, Sally's children weren't really a huge part of the movie, which I liked (sorry, I find kids super boring), but in the book, they're a huge part of it. It was really kind of annoying, and it almost made me stop reading.
I still liked the story, and thought the book was good, but wished it was more like the movie. Blasphemy, I know.

On the outside I wouldn't have thought I would like this book. I'll sum up myself for you, History....(As Giles once said about Buffy. )"She lives very much in the now and well history is very much about the then" I do not have a love for history. I also do not have a love for science I just don't....This book though, I have nothing but love for! I absolutely adored Kate I find her wonderful and her and Matthews love is unbeatable. I loved the format and how some parts of the book are newspaper clippings and notes, I found this fun and enjoyable. Unfortunately I did find some parts confusing but that's because I am easily confused! Nothing reading some reviews won't clear up for me though! I can't wait to read the next one!
