"Gaskell’s first novel, the tale of a working-class girl in Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, probably isn’t her best, but I’ve not yet got through it without tears. It’s so alive with indignation, sympathy, and compassion."

"This definitive biography of the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia is superbly written and totally captivating. Frankly, it transformed me into a pre-revolution Russophile; I can’t read enough about this fascinating era that shook the world."

This book has a special place in my heart because it saved my senior thesis in undergrad. I was a lonely little Texan in Midwestern hell, and decided to write my thesis on the TX revolution after I bought this book.
In short, this is the history of the revolution, the Republic of Texas, then becoming part of the USA. The colorful and well-known characters involved in the colonization and subsequent events are all used to create an overall picture of the time period. Overall, a great book.
