"I read The Easter Parade or Revolutionary Road every year. Richard Yates is just a good word-for-word on-the-page writer. He couldn’t be more different than someone like Joy Williams or Raymond Carver. His sentences are very complex, the stories are complicated and he was such a miserable man. I always like people who would hate me. I don’t know what that’s about. But Richard Yates would definitely hate me"

"Like Xanadu, it’s a phantasmagoria – but more menacing. A lone teenage gal and her dog hit the (yellow, brick) road and pick up a trio of men along the way. Try pitching that idea to a Hollywood studio! The only film in recent memory with a similar story was the lugubrious indie Wendy and Lucy, which I couldn’t even finish. Maybe a flying monkey or a smartly dressed munchkin might have perked things up."

If you're looking for a book that is a fun read, but isn't frivolous; or one that investigates relationships in a family with a special-needs child, but isn't too serious; or something with interesting and introspective characters who aren't self-centered (at least, not exclusively); then this may be the book for you. Find out why in my review here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2015/11/17/a-well-punctuated-road-trip/

Original story, set between the events of 'White Night' and 'Small Favor', in which Harry, Molly and Mouse end up investigating a case (and reluctantly teaming up with 'Gentleman Johnny Marcone') that leads to a mad sorcerer living in Chicago's Undertown who has an issue with Marcone becoming a signatory of the Unseelie Accords.

Middle of the road stuff: It adds a bit more to the background of Harry's world, but is not essential.
