Is Shred-Pop a thing?
So, this is specific to my favorite Mr. Big album, but their latest Defying Gravity drops this week. I saw them in June in Tempe, AZ, having forgotten how much I enjoyed them back in the day. I had lost interest when Gilbert left the group, and now that he is back they sound as good as ever! Watching him with Billy Sheehan is just mind blowing for any guitar fan or player, and they can write some great songs to showcase that talent. Eric Martin sounds fantastic still, and touring drummer Matt Starr takes over admirably for Pat Torpey, who still plays percussion and sings but is unfortunately limited by Parkinson's Disease. Anyone who is a fan of their ballads gets a little love in the setlist, but mostly the band is there to rock. I had an amazing time, and have pre-ordered the new record already. Check them out!

"I was just being honest. The most listened-to records in my collection, I'm just astounded at the extraordinary thing that they did. I'm from a generation of people who listen to music, or who listened, past tense, to music. I really wanted to belong to it, you know, you'd paint an album sleeve on the back of your coat to say this is who I am and what I listen to. And I was very happy throughout my teen years to be defined by what I was listening to. And I wanted the world to know about that, claiming a band as my own. I was a total fan when they did what I still consider to be the bravest thing that any band in rock music has done, which was after creating this amazing, successful commercial record that nevertheless is so incredibly creative and artistic, to then go further into the arts and completely disregard the fiscal side of what they had done with the success of The Colour Of Spring."

"The whole New York thing was kind of like the Bowie outer space thing – you’d see it on films. And when I first went out to New York I thought how right the music was for the place. It was the antithesis of the California thing. I bought a Velvets compilation with ‘I'm Waiting For The Man’ on, and every title fascinated me. When I got Banana everything about it was cool, a different kind of cool to Bowie, just this disrespective, narky cunt, with the greatest rock & roll band in the history of time. Technically it doesn’t matter, the chemistry between them was incredible. Every rhythm guitar part I’ve ever played I’ve just nicked from Lou Reed, even some of the punkier stuff. There were all these punky little rhythms. Not as important as Bowie in what he decided to do, but up there because it was a band with a definite front man. When I met the right people later in life I would use the Velvets model."
