Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
2001 | Comedy, Romance

"I’m also a big fan of comedy as well, so even things to this day like Bridget Jones’s Diary, there was just something about Bridget Jones that I thought … And I guess it’s [Renée Zellweger‘s] performance. I remember there was a lot of talk about the fact that they cast an American in that role, but I think she captured the sensibility of a repressed English girl who was desperate to fall in love so beautifully And as an actor myself, often you caught slack if you’re playing a gay person and you’re not really gay, or you’re playing an American and you’re not really American, or you’re playing whatever it happens to be. I just think if you can find the essence in a character and pull it off, then it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what your nationality is, etc. There’s something to me about that film that’s like the perfect romantic comedy. I just think it’s a bit hard to put my finger on what it is, to be honest. It’s just beautifully executed. Everything’s so well balanced. Often whenever I read a romantic comedy now, I’m comparing it to Bridget Jones and if it’s planned well."

Movie Favorite

"This is a weird tie. But A Room with a View was my favorite movie when I was nine. And it really screwed with my head. It’s so over-the-top romantic, and I remember it made me dizzy with desire. I really expected nothing less than Julian Sands in a Tuscan poppy field from my adult romantic life. And Criterion is about to release it . . . I’m really excited about this. Honestly, I haven’t seen it since I was like fifteen, so it’s high time to revisit it. But I’m a little scared to revisit it, too, so I’m pairing it with another about-to-released Criterion movie, Agnes Varda’s Documenteur, which I saw recently at Lincoln Center and really, really loved. Documenteur is this gorgeous, weird portrayal of heartbreak and aimless wandering through a strange city trying to find an apartment. Watching it gets you in touch with all the times you’ve felt horribly depressed and also overwhelmed by the beauty and color of everything around you. It’s kind of about what happens after you get together with Julian Sands and have a kid with him and then you separate and suddenly you’re a single mother wandering around Los Angeles crying."

One of my all-time favorite movies!
I love Deadpool, but the version in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was awful. Ryan Reynolds did his best but...ugh. So I was iffy about the premise of a full movie for the character. Would it just be a full-length rehash of the Wolverine mess?

No, I'm glad to say it is not. Deadpool is an action-packed, raunchy, romantic but not sappy, and character-driven movie that definitely left me wanting more. I'm glad I gave it another go and am really looking forward to the sequel.

Bridget Jones is back
I didn't think another Bridget Jones film could possibly be good, but I'm pleased to say I was wrong.

This is the sequel Edge of Reason should've been. It's funny, heartwarming and all round lovely. Bridget is one of those endearing characters you can't help but love, despite the fact that Renee Zellweger is looking a little plastic nowadays, and Mark Darcy is adoringly awkward. I'm not a huge fan of romantic comedies but this has to be an exception. I cant believe anyone could watch this film and not feel warm & fuzzy inside.

What can I say about Suicide Squad? To be nice, the soundtrack was great and Margot Robbie did a good job with Harley. I cannot understand why the relationship between Joker and Harley is always romanticized, because it's definitely not romantic. The plot was rushed and discombobulated, and they underutilized characters. Why did they killed off Slipknot five minutes after introducing him? Why even waste the time introducing him? I personally can't stand Jared Leto as an actor, but I understood where they were going with the new Joker. But, in comparison to Heath Ledger, he was trash.

Promising but ultimately disappointing
I've loved some of Hugh Howey's other works and I had high hopes for his take on a romantic novel, but sadly this was pretty disappointing. It had promise, with an interesting plot based around a romance taking place in a near future where the sea levels have risen and shells are becoming extinct. Howey writes very well and I can't fault him for that, I just felt he concentrated too much on the predictable romance side than developing the scientific future aspect. The characters too were nothing special, and the whole book just felt very rushed.
