Bostonian916 (449 KP) rated Joker (2019) in Movies

I found it refreshing to see a movie built specifically around Joker without the backdrop of Batman looming overhead. There have been some remarkable interpretations of Joker in the past but I don't think that the viewer has been given the opportunity to really dive into the villain and what makes him who he has become. It was nice to see a film maker give the audience permission to root for someone who wasn't the traditional hero, but a "hero" in his own rite, depending on your point of view and interpretation.
I do think that there were parts of the movie that were lacking development. But I think that can be said about just about any movie you can find. All in all, worth a watch. I'm not sure if I will watch again. Time will tell.

The writing style (1 more)
Skillfully written
This is one of those books, a bit like Kent Haruf's books, in which not a lot happens. There is no full stop. I expected the full stop to be at the end but nope none there either. The author is very clever in how he manages to switch from one subject to the next without using a full stop. It is simply a man narrating his life. Not an original idea for a plot but well executed. There isn't really a big event until the end of the novel. You come to root for this man, ordinary and unremarkable as he is. Although i could see the ending coming i found it devastating. My only criticism was that it kept going after the 'big' ending but I suppose that's part of the writing style.

Walk of shame
Another great season of the show. Each season i continue to root for Tyrion Arya and the Tyrells though my love of the Tyrell's is because i want to become the Queen of thrones when I'm old. Sparrow was a sneaky stand out this season and he manipulation of religion for his own purpose is great. Finally Cersi had some punishment fitting things she has done though.
Arya training this season is also stand out entry into the house of black and white is superb and skills she is learning is great for anyone that small and want to be powerful.
Daenerys now has Tyrion as a adviser and as someone that loves Tyrion and loves dragons I am so envious of the Stormborn right now and kind of want her to win just because of her logic of an adviser.

Compulsive viewing
I think this has been somewhat unfairly compared to Breaking Bad. While there is a similar mix of family/day job vs criminal underworld, the lines are much more blurred and the criminality much closer to the surface.
Jason Bateman's character is nowhere near as likeable/flawed as Walter White and at times you struggle to root for him in the same way.
The true star of the show has to be Ruth Langmore - the redneck/evil genius mix that you cannot take your eyes off.
The appearance of fellow Scot Peter Mullan was somewhat unexpected, however his attempt at a Missouri accent was just atrocious. I am pretty sure he was completely over-dubbed in the pilot episode, I am guessing in favour of a better accent (God alone knows what his first attempt must have been like!).

This was a fun read, even for someone who has never read any of the Outlander series.
The book alternates between chapters telling us the story, and blog posts that Emma writes as she goes along. The blog posts are short and sweet, and sometimes provide a little insight into things that have not yet been fully disclosed in the story.
I did feel that the heroine was a bit naive for 29. I often wanted to yell into the book at her, and to point out how blind she was being, or how ridiculous some of her choices were. Even so, Emma is a likable character, and I couldnt help but root for her and wish her success in her quest to find love.
NOTE: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A book where the President’s son falls for the Prince of Wales? Sign me up!
This book is raunchy and the language is rather explicit, and my goodness, I loved it. This one was one of my rare audiobook listens, and I was driving down the road laughing and crying. Wiping away actual tears at points.
McQuiston combines a sort of coming of age love story against the backdrop of politics. Both storylines are compelling beyond belief. Alex, the President’s son and our main character, is incredibly well-written. Funny, sweet, and so real. And Henry, our Prince, is lovely too. It’s impossible not to root for them.
This book is witty, sweet, a surprising nail biter at times, and offers such a great message—now more than ever. (And the narrator in this one was easily my favorite in my limited audiobook career.) Cannot recommend it enough!
