The Equalizer (2014)

Guts Over Fear
The Equalizer- i love this movie. I remember when i saw this back in 2014 and i loved it. The acting, the drama, the suspense, the violence and Denzel. A good guy gone rogue. A good guy gone bad. Who knows his skills and will use his skills to the test to kill bad guys.

The plot: Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a man of mysterious origin who believes he has put the past behind him, dedicates himself to creating a quiet new life. However, when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a teenager who has been manhandled by violent Russian mobsters, he simply cannot walk away. With his set of formidable skills, McCall comes out of self-imposed retirement and emerges as an avenging angel, ready to take down anyone who brutalizes the helpless.

Its a excellent movie and a must watch film.

"This is directed by Alexander Ptushko. I think he was Russian but he did all his films in Finland because they actually had money. This is like an amalgam of Norse folk tales poured into a film. The special effects are stunning for the time of the film, and yet it is so whacked out. It’s indescribable. It seems like it was filmed with an alien culture. Nothing makes any sense of any iteration of myth or culture that you can think up in this world. It’s actually quite beautiful, and it has a hero whose name is Lemminkäinen who tries to be a hero and just continues to fail in every respect and yet he comes home and it’s “hail to the conquering hero” even though he’s a total failure. And we actually sing a song in the Riff Trax about what a failure he is."

The description of this short story is quite self explanatory. It tells a story of a lawyer Henry, who works for Russian mafia’s head, Vance. During one of the meetings with another mafia family, Henry’s friend Julie, gets killed. He supposed to take care and protect Julie, but he failed, and he wants revenge on the people who have done it.

This short story introduces some of the characters, who will be in the next part of the book. They all are cruel and vicious. It does explain why the story of Grim began, but doesn’t explain the story of the Grim itself. I would’ve liked to know the story of the Grim, how he was born, how he became Grim, as a prequel. And yes, the story told could’ve been as the follow up. But I think author left the juicy bits of the Grim for later…

Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.

It surprises me a little bit that this film is only rated 15. There's violence, sex, torture, nudity... so many things that make this one classic fodder for an 18 rating.

Red Sparrow was a good spy flick, gripping throughout but a little bit predictable at times. The more I think about this one the more I'm tempted to give it only two stars. While I found the story line interesting, there isn't much that made me enthusiastic.

People ask me what I've seen recently and this is the only one I can never remember. I don't think it's going to be one of this year's must see movies.
