I have to say that the new movie, OLD, from M Night Shyamalan, had me intrigued when I first saw the trailer for it a while back so when the film finally had its release here in the UK on Friday (23rd July) I had to check it out at my local Cineworld.

If you are a dedicated follower/fan of Shyamalan then this is going to be a film that you will want to see on the big screen, don’t expect lots of action or any action at all in this movie it’s a slow-burning mystery/drama that keeps you guessing.

I saw this on Amazon Prime (I don't think it got a theatrical release), and heard good things about it, with a few of the reviewers saying it was even better than Top Gun: Maverick.

Unfortunately, I think they watched a different film than me.

This is set during the Korean War, and tells the story of the friendship between Naval aviators Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown; the latter one of the first non-white aviators in the air force at the time.

Personally, I found the film to be quite long and drawn-out, with even the vaunted flight scenes looking just not-quite right!

The original 'the Meg' film saw Jason Statham taking on a giant prehistoric shark (my money was always on 'the Stathamator' to win).

If you're expecting anything different from the sequel, you'd be disappointed!

Yes, several - bit not all -of the cast return, with this film very much broken into two distinct sections: the first (roughly) half or so on the seabed below "the Thermocline" - which the creatures below are usually unable to swim up beyond - and the second half on the surface itself.

Second half is also almost a re-tread of the second half of the first movie.

In short, a B-movie writ large.

Slow burn, debut novel
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

In What She Saw by Wendy Clarke, you meet Leona, a loving and extremely protective mother of teenaged Beth. They do everything together, absolutely everything. They seem to be perfect and have the perfect life. Of course, things are not always what they seem. Leona and Beth both have secrets which they keep from each other and from everyone else. The question asked is, "how far will a mother go to keep her child safe?"

What She Saw is a slow burn which I had difficulty getting into. However, since I did, I could not put it down. I was a Psychology major and am a sucker for when a character meeting with a psychologist partly reveals the story.

The story uses flashbacks and the present. It starts slow but is suspenseful and well-written.

According to Goodreads, Clarke has published over three hundred short stories published in national women's magazines, and this is her debut novel. As of 6/13/19, it has a rating of 4.25 out of 5. Most of the ratings are 5 stars, and none are 1 star. For a debut novel, that is quite impressive.

I am looking forward to reading more by Wendy Clarke.
