From the first moment I saw this as a kid, years ago, even til now, I still feel the same sense of wonder, of magic, of mystery and adventure when I see this film. George Lucas created a classic that will surely live on and on long after we're gone. The story sucked me in. Of course, as a kid I was immediately more interested in the weapons/gadgets and how could I recreate them with what resources I had? But as I grew to understand the characters, the story, which really didn't take me long, I loved the story that much more. They kind of became extended family. The interaction between the main trio of course (Han, Leia, Luke) was hysterical. The at times strained friendship between R2 and 3P0 made them that much more real. And how could you not love Yoda and Chewie? I could go on for hours, truly, but I'll leave it at this. Wonderful movie! Great message for everyone, fantastic fun for the family!

Is Shred-Pop a thing?
So, this is specific to my favorite Mr. Big album, but their latest Defying Gravity drops this week. I saw them in June in Tempe, AZ, having forgotten how much I enjoyed them back in the day. I had lost interest when Gilbert left the group, and now that he is back they sound as good as ever! Watching him with Billy Sheehan is just mind blowing for any guitar fan or player, and they can write some great songs to showcase that talent. Eric Martin sounds fantastic still, and touring drummer Matt Starr takes over admirably for Pat Torpey, who still plays percussion and sings but is unfortunately limited by Parkinson's Disease. Anyone who is a fan of their ballads gets a little love in the setlist, but mostly the band is there to rock. I had an amazing time, and have pre-ordered the new record already. Check them out!

Better Than Expected
I have been looking forward to this movie since it was announced, as I am a huge Stephen King fan and I am a fan of the source material that this movie is based on. However, when the movie was released it was ruthlessly torn apart by critics and I even heard a few brandish it as the worst movie of the year or as one of Stephen King's worst adaptions.
You can look at this movie from two perspectives. You can look at it as a lazy adaption of a fantastic layered story full of intrigue, or you can see it for what it is, a big, dumb, mindless summer blockbuster. As someone who saw it as the latter, I enjoyed it for what it was. Yes it was ridiculous and pretty cheesy at times, but if you enjoy it as intended and don't take it too seriously, there is a fun time to be had here.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some of the patterns and ideas are really cool, and as an easily inspired person I sort of want to go over to my local goodwill and get a bunch of wool sweaters and make stuff. The patterns and photos and projects are very inspiring. However it was difficult to get past some of the less attractive designs. A few sweaters just looked trashy. Some of the scarves that could have looked artistic were just strange. The little creatures could be really cool, but I didn't like the images she gave.
I would use this book as a launching pad or a starting point for people who are already good at taking scraps and salvaging things to make into new clothes and want some ideas on what to do with sweaters. A possibility I saw with this book is wool roving (using needles to push raw wool into felt to create a pattern). With some design and color work, these could be cool projects. I just don't particularly like all the photos she used.

This is the first book I have read by Harlen Coben. I saw it the library and it looked pretty interesting. Matt Hunter is on his way back to college when the unthinkable happens, he gets in a fight and ends up killing a boy. The story picks up 9 years later. Matt is married to Olivia, he is working as a "paralegal" at his brother's law firm, and is about to be a father. Things couldn't be any better for him right now. Until one day after his wife leaves for a business trip, he gets a strange message from her on his cell phone. Its a picture of another man. The next message is even more startling. His wife in a blonde wig with this man. What does all this mean, why would his wife do this to him. The reality turns out to be a whole lot more than Matt could ever imagine. This book is chock full of twists and turns and strippers and cops and ex-cons and family. A good book I didn't want to put down.

Ok, so I never saw the twist coming.
This story is crafted so well, and kept me so engaged, that it was hard to put the book down. The entire time, I felt so bad for Cass - what must it be like to forget things like how to use the washing machine or the microwave? Terrifying, I imagine. To feel like you're losing your mind, and then to find out you were being gas-lighted all along by the two people you love most in the world?
I felt vindicated right along with her when the truth came out and she got some measure of revenge on her husband and best friend - both of whom are just terrible, terrible people and deserve every ounce of it. In truth, the actual "murder mystery" part of the story was entirely secondary for me, as I was completely wrapped up in what was happening to Cass.

Hannah, the first in entry into the Daughters of the Sea series, is a fairly solid tale with an enjoyable premise. Any little girl who loved the Little Mermaid would most likely want to read this story. I like the fact that it takes place in Victorian times and it teaches the reader about the hierarchy of staff in an upper-class family's household. The author did a good job making Hannah likable, Lila psychotic, and everyone else was fleshed out just enough. However, the relationship between the painter, Stannish Whitman Wheeler, and Hannah was shaky and unbelievable, and I never quite saw the need for this to be included. My biggest complaint is the ending, which for all the lead-up of this moment, felt very anti-climactic and left much to be desired. While some younger readers might find the pacing of the book a bit slow, it managed to hold my interest throughout. Overall, it's an easy read and has a good, if somewhat flawed, story. 3.5 stars

Hard to handle
Director Pascal Laugier said he modeled the ideas and script for this film after "Hostel" and you can see a lot of comparisons from the obvious plot similarities to the definite two sections of both films showcasing different styles and subtexts.
Martyrs is more cerebral, darker and more supernatural getting into the characters minds somewhat, but still having that brutal, visceral element for sure.
I would have to say some of the brutality may be unnecessary; however, I think one of the points of the film is how much a human being can endure, so it's hard to make a conclusion on that.
If you don't like movies like Hostel or Saw I can't seeing you like this one either since they have similar plot devices. I found a lot of this film interesting as it takes chances and definitely shows you things you haven't seen before.
If someone said it was "torture porn shite" it would be hard to argue with them either. All your point of view I guess.

Expected more
Finally, after hearing about this movie from many websites & many online lists & such, I was able to see it for the first time, tonight. I was expecting a lot of blood & gore & a great revenge move. There was some gore, but not much & the revenge was just meh. It did not live up to the hype. A girl gets brutally raped by 4 men & then gets revenge on them. Yes, we've seen it before & better in films like "The Last House on the Left" & such. The rapists in this movie are very stupid & are easily fooled by the woman and they get there's. But I never felt they got it bad enough for their crime. The movie is very low budget looking, yet cost $650,000 somehow. The make-up effects were terrible. The supposed bruises on the actor's faces look like some rubbed some charcoal on them. The acting is not bad & may be better than "Last House", but it doesn't make up for the lackluster plot. I'm glad I finally saw this, knowing I won't have to see it again.

A highly entertaining, twist filled read
When I first started this book i was a little concerned. The plot about 8 hijacked driverless cars seemed a little thin to be able to stretch over such a long 400+ page book, hug as soon as I started reading it had me hooked.
The 400+ pages flew past in record speed, I just couldn't put this book down. What seemed a fairly similar plot was filled with intriguing and well developed character, as well as some fantastic twists and reveals that I never saw coming. It also features quite a serious commentary on social media and bias and even racism, and despite being set in a society slightly more technologically advanced than our own, you can see the truth in the issues highlighted here. You can also imagine our societies becoming similar to this one in the very near future, which is a very sobering thought. This really is a highly entertaining read, and it's not often I get so enthralled in a story to not see the twists coming!
