David McK (3663 KP) rated Kindergarten Cop (1990) in Movies

Early 90s (1990?) effort by the Austrian Oak to soften his tough guy image, playing the role of a tough cop who has to go undercover in a nursery school to track down and protect the former wife of a drug dealer.
And, of course, 'hilarity' ensues.
Or, at least, what the screenwriters thought would be hilarious, as Arnie finds himself struggling to cope with a class of 5(?) year old while also starting to fall for one of his colleagues.
Actually, to be fair, it's not all bad: it is enjoyable enough, just not laugh out loud funny.

I LOVE this podcast. I'm not a huge podcast listener, I prefer audiobooks.
I've always been interested in art, and took several classes during undergrad. I still kick myself for not going to grad school for art history truthfully.
Dascal is a Curator herself, and didn't always love art. Now, she presents interesting stories about works of art and artists that are appealing, even to the non-art lover. My favorite eps are about Van Gogh, and whether Sickert could possibly be Jack the Ripper.
I purchased her new book yesterday, and I can't wait to start reading.

David McK (3663 KP) rated The Karate Kid (1984) in Movies

"Wax on ... wax off"
Classic 1980s family movie, that is almost like a toned down version of Rocky, and that sees Mr Miyaga train Daniel(san) after he moves to LA and becomes the victim of High school bullying by the local 'in' crowd who also train at the local Doyo whilst a young Elisabeth Shue provides the love interest.
And, I've only just recently found out, the superlative scene where a drunk Mr Miyaga recounts the death of his wife and unborn son in an internment camp was nearly left on the cutting room floor!!

David McK (3663 KP) rated Top Gun (1986) in Movies

"I feel the need. The need... for speed!"
"This is what in call a target rich environment"
"Son, your ego is writing cheques your body can't cash"
1980s action classic (that I was all of 7 when it was released) starring a then up and coming (and young!) Tom Cruise as Maverick, the hotshot pilot who gets a shot at Top Gun: the military training school for the top 1% of naval pilots.
This has a great cast (Michael Ironside, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Tom Cruise himself) alongside some great aerial battles, but does drag in bits.

colin... (64 KP) rated Hamilton (2020) in Movies

The fact that I have to talk to people in film school who say that they love rap and the FIRST example they provide is Hamilton is one of the most disgusting things ever. The rapping style here is technically flawed, incredibly one note with little to no variation in rhythmic patterns and multis and as close to being off beat as possible.
Also, hot take, Lin-Manuel Miranda cannot sing. Sorry.
The only, and I MEAN ONLY reason that this is a 3/10 is the amazing performances from Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
