This carries on from where the last left off with the confrontation between Mac and Dani. Well, before we got to that bit we had a rather heated scene with Mac and Barrons that happened early on in the series and then a short(ish) retelling of the King and his wanting his human Queen to live forever with him.

Back to Dani and Mac, Dani overreacts a little and jumps through several portals to escape Mac and then we get Mac's POV of what's just happened. She's trying to come to terms with what Dani did all those months ago and trying to figure out how to get Dani to talk to her.

We switch between POV's fairly regularly and get a few new characters to the series. Jada is a sidhe-seer hiding a secret and an Unseelie Princess makes an appearance.

We also get Christian's POV, too. As he's currently being held by the Crimson Hag, it's generally memories of his time growing up in Scotland and trying not to fully fall into the Unseelie Prince side of himself while he waits to be rescued.

That is also one of the main plotlines in this, getting Christian back from the Crimson Hag and they manage it but it takes a lot to get there.

And then we end on a cliff-hanger that has me wanting to go buy the next book right away.

I would definitely class myself as a fan of Iain's books; I have read a fair number and have rarely been disappointed. Iain's stories take me back to the books of my youth and although I am a number of years past my youth now, I still enjoy a good horror/creep-fest book every now and again and Iain is more and more my go-to author.

Here we have the first in an as yet unknown number of books in a new series. I can't go into much detail about the plot as I don't want to spoil it for anyone but a group of Manchester lads go on a stag weekend in the wilds of Scotland and whilst investigating the area, climb a hill and find something odd ... everything starts to go badly wrong from then on.

Well written, excellent characters, perfect setting, great pace, plenty of tension and excellent body horror scenes makes this a great read and I eagerly await Book 2: The Village which is out on 6th October 2020 ... I want to read it now!

Disclaimer: As a member of Iain's "street team", I was sent a copy of this book before publication however I didn't get chance to read it before it was published so decided to buy it anyway to support him so he can continue to write great stories and also because I'm good like that 😉

The Bass Rock is based around three different women: Sarah, Ruth and Viviane - and of course, the Bass Rock seems to be a constant. It really exists, I've googled it, and it's off the coast of North Berwick in Scotland. This is where the story is set.

The novel looks at a lot of themes over the years: the role of women, both their expected role and what they actually want to do; relationships between men and women, and those relationships between women as well; cruelty and abuse; and mental health is an important theme, and indeed is central to a great many of the characters.

It's just the kind of book that I enjoy reading, both in style and thematic content. Sometimes you just need a book that ticks along, one that's in no rush to get where it's going. If that makes you think that this is a boring book, it really isn't. There's a lot going on in these timelines, the characters have a lot of things to deal with in their relationships and lives in general, but I never felt rushed. It's a book that I wanted to last. In fact, I really do think that this has been an ideal book to read during this coronavirus lockdown. I think that it will also be a book that I gift to other people.
