"This book is like girlhood to me somehow, even though I was already in my twenties when I first read it. I reread it every few years and it reminds me, every time, of the magical feeling I had when I first encountered the hypnotic and cool voice of its narrator, Scottish raver—and super young widow—and chainsmoker of Silk Cuts: the unforgettable Morvern Callar."

"One of the greatest Scottish writers, probably the most affecting prose witness to the unique spirit of the Highland wilderness there has ever been. This book, chronicling life lived with otters on the remote west coast of Scotland, was made into a classic children’s film by Disney in the ’60s, but the book has depths and breadth untapped by the movie. Our Walden of the Hebrides. Beautiful."

"A surprisingly complex film, especially considering its subject matter: Scottish military men and bagpiping! The contrast between the two commanders (Alex Guinness and John Mills) is a fascinating set of character studies. The film builds to a powerful emotional climax, which, at least for me, was completely unexpected. Guinness’s performance as Major Jock Sinclair is very rich and layered—especially for such a broad and bombastic character."

"The Name of the Rose. That’s a cool movie. You got Sean Connery, you got a detective story, you got a bit of gay monk sex. Can’t go wrong with that. If you’re Scottish and you don’t like Sean Connery movies, there’s something f—in’ wrong with you. Actually, if you’re human and you don’t like Sean Connery movies, there’s something wrong with you."

Rolling Stone's 224th greatest album of all time
I was dreading this, as Sweet Caroline is played at every Scottish wedding, birthday, christening and probably a fair number of funerals. I can't stand it's cheesiness, with accompanying drunken "bah-bah-baaaaah".
However, as this is the first track the pain is over quickly and the rest of the collection is OK, generic 70s rock.
