"In 1962, I was still listening to my parents’ records and vaguely aware that there were other things out there. Jean Redpath, a Scottish folk singer, sang in a kind of clear, quavery voice. They were traditional Scottish songs, but very simple arrangements, like folk versions. The Scottish influence was a big part of my parents’ record collection. They didn’t have Scottish bagpipes or anything; they were more interested in Scottish roots music: Woody Guthrie, Ewan MacColl, and different people from that era, who were writing folk songs that were vaguely political but also beautiful. I realized that this sounds very palatable and pretty on the surface, but there's something darker going on underneath."

I really enjoyed the audiobook version. the reader uses a Scottish accent and it made it much more enjoyable. Predictable storyline for the most part.

Good start to a new historical mystery series. Recommended by Sharon Kay Penman too! Set in the English/Scottish marches in the dying years of Elizabeth's reign.

"This is an epic modern Scottish classic. Gray is a renowned artist as well as author and here he paints a dystopian Glasgow that is mesmerizing and terrifying in equal measures."

Not his best
I did not think this was as good as the previous novels i have read in the series. Although the story was clever and had lots of different characters it relied to much on your knowledge of the Scottish peerage system and a lot of it went right over my head. There were too many acronyms and codes for various departments and to be honest i got bored with trying to figure out what they were supposed to represent. I would say this is the worst out of the series so far :( It wont put me off though and i will be reading book 8 soon :)

When I started reading this book I was unaware it was part of a series and as so I feel I have missed out on much of the history. Part 1 is OK so far but I have to say that the written scottish accent is very annoying, I am quite capable of putting in a scottish accent as I read if the character has one. I want to keep reading but the accent thing is really going to bug me.

"This is like a Scottish 'Catcher in the Rye.' You actually feel you're inside this women's head, it is that visceral. And having experienced a downward spiral myself I so admire her accuracy in every detail."
