Mothergamer (1568 KP) rated Mortal Kombat (2021) in Movies

Lots of great action and yes it's a bit light on the story, but it's not completely terrible. It's a fun popcorn movie and if you're a fan of the Mortal Kombat games like me, it's not a bad ride. I did love Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion because he's a really talented actor and he made the role work for him. It was disappointing that there's some characters missing like Johnny Cage, but maybe we'll get to see him in the sequel. If you take it for what it is, pure entertainment it's a good film.

Bostonian916 (449 KP) rated Léon: The Professional (1994) in Movies

How Jean Reno didn't become a household name after his performance in Leon is incredulous to me. Pairing his stellar performance with that of a villainous Gary Oldman and a VERY young Natalie Portman and you have an acting trifecta for the ages. Matching Besson's direction tit for tat allowed this squad to create one of the more memorable movies of its time. Leaving no potential for a follow up, you begin to realize it simply had to be that way. And I believe Besson understood that. You can't replicate the level of excellence this movie achieved and call it a sequel.

David McK (3562 KP) rated Pitch Black (2000) in Movies

Creature feature from the year 2000, starring a then up-and-coming Vin Diesel as the anti-hero Riddick, one of the survivors (that includes Farscape's Claudia Black!) of a crashed spaceship on a planet that has a unique day/night cycle: no nights, except for an eclipse once every 22 years. Which is when the rather nasty nocturnal creatures come out...
Much better than the direct sequel (there's a reason the third film in the mid 2010s went back to this version of the character), with an interesting colour palette and even a nice character arc for Riddick!

David McK (3562 KP) rated Rush Hour 2 (2001) in Movies
Jan 15, 2021
2001 sequel to the 1998 original, picking up with Carter and Lee in Hong Kong (see the end of 'Rush Hour'), effectively flipping the script from the first film on its head - now it's Carter who is the fish out of water.
However, when the American embassy is bombed and the trail leads to the triad its not long before they are both back on the job, ending up (in this case) in Las Vegas and a link to Chief Inspector Lee's past.
Not as funny as the first film, with Tucker seeming to dial the 'annoyingness' up to 11!

Lee KM Pallatina (951 KP) rated Happy Death Day 2U (2019) in Movies

What goes around comes around
A sequel rarely stacks up against the original but in this case, it does.
A plot almost identical to its predecessor which quickly changes saving the movie from a copy paste review.
This better take on inception (because inception sucks) adds players to its life and death game starting off at day 1.
Includes original cast and new members, with a faster pace than the 1st, happy death day 2U is a rollercoaster of fun.
If you enjoyed the 1st, you'd be outta your freaking mind to miss this.
Dark humorous tone throughout.
