The Last of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II
2020 | Action/Adventure
I really wanted to like this game. There have been so many issues with the leaks and misleading trailers. Initially the game starts out pretty strong showing Ellie and Joel living in Jackson peacefully. That doesn't last long of course and the main theme of the story is about how the cycle of revenge and violence hurts everyone. The gameplay is good for the most part, but the storytelling comes across as very heavy handed and having to switch between Ellie and Abby feels frustrating. I understand the intent behind what the writers were trying to do showing both sides of the situation but it comes across as clunky and sloppy writing. I also took issue with the handling of a trans character in the game. They made this trans character a target for constant abuse and trauma, including deadnaming them something that is incredibly hurtful to a trans person. The fact that the writers did not get any input from trans writers is frankly grossly irresponsible because we LGBT people are more than trauma and we're tired of this constant trauma trope. It's not okay and it's very lazy writing. The story is not completely bad, but it's not great either and I feel we didn't really need this sequel. Necromancers in Space
Before reading Gideon the Ninth all I knew about it was: Necromancers in space and lesbians. Everyone who recommended it to me said it was "Amazing" and I "had to read it." Why the lesbian thing was a thing, I'm not sure? representation? Yeah, I'll go with that.
Anyway,
They were right. It is amazing, interesting read. I admit I had some difficulty getting into the first couple of chapters, however I think that was a me problem not from the narrative. Which is gothic and dark, everything that you'd expect from wizards who raise the dead and fight with skeletons would be, and so much more.
It is an interesting concept, although it read more of a mystery to me than a horror, (horror isn't really my genre, I don't have much to base it on. but most of the critics agree that it is in that genre.) and you're in space for maybe 15 pages of the book, if that much. I think there will be more space in the sequel.

The characters interacted with each other well, the tension between them all are great and I had a clear picture of each. Tamsyn kept me guessing on who was or wasn't trustworthy, and the palace that they explore was beautifully described.
Highly recommend if you want something different. This adventure isn't something you'd forget.

Eli is a young boy with a life threatening condition. He can't be exposed to any contaniments whatsoever. He has to live in a plastic bubble in his bedroom and wear full protective gear when outside. Hoping for a miracle cure, his parents drive him to a secluded facility to see a doctor where him and his parents would stay whilst he received treatment. The facility has been completely decontaminated and is deemed safe for Eli to step out of his suit and live a relitavely normal life whilst there. However, life is normal. Eli begins to see various ghosts and spirits who seem to be trying to tell him something and getting him to leave.
The first hour of the movie I did enjoy and the boy who played Eli played him very well and was very realistic, which is more than I can say for his the adults at times. The ending was completely bizarre and unexpected. Not being a fan of possession movies it wasn't for me and I just found it ridiculous. Saying that though, the visuals were excellent. For example showing Eli with destruction behind him was spot on in showing what he was capable of. The ending felt like there could have been a sequel, but it there was I can't see me watching it.
