Serial Killers at the movies
By Christopher Berry-Dee
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bestselling author, Christopher Berry-Dee, talks to the serial killers whose wicked stories have most thrilled and fascinated us at the movies and, through far-ranging and disturbing interviews, he tells the stories of the mass murderers who provided the inspiration for some of cinema's most shocking films.

This was a very interesting read I’m enjoying reading his opinions and his outcomes on research. There are certain a few films from this to add to the list and also some to rewatch with new eyes.

F***ed Up S**t
Long-time friends Alvin and Fran talk about the true crime you probably haven't heard of, because most podcasts cover the white male serial killers and not the minority serial killers covered in Affirmative Murder. Sprinkled with adult language, mood lightening occasional humour, and conversations about difficult topics, these two manage to be irreverent, informative, intelligent, and enlightening.
They don't mind if you look sideways at them when you pass them on the street, as long as you look at everyone else with suspicion too.
Welcome to the most educational fact-free zone you ever entered. ♥️

A film that's really fun....house
I stumbled onto this by accident. What a happy accident. The story is fairly average, group of friends go to a Halloween funhouse attraction based on local serial killers - the very same killers who have just escaped from a local asylum. Plenty of stalk and slash happens as the killers now there way through the unexpecting guests. What's not average is the gore which is unbelievably good for a low budget horror. Also good is the comedy - this film is genuinely quite funny with the sheriff's deputy and 'machete' being highlights. It's not going to win any awards or blow anyone away but for a 90 min black comedy gorefest you will not be disappointed!!

Wide range of topics, for example; serial killers, horrific old "treatments", terrifying "monsters" and loads more. (0 more)
Lore is the first podcast I listened to, my boyfriend got me into it and it's still my favourite. I ended up binge listening to it, and despite the fact that it had been released years prior to my starting to listen to it, I was soon waiting eagerly for new episodes to be released, as I had caught up.I am particularly interested in episodes about real life things like serial killers and old "treatments" but I also love episodes on paranormal/folk lore topics. Some episodes are actually terrifying one such episode is about dolls, I was listening to it late at night and had to turn it off until the next day.

I received an uncorrected proof of a true-crime book about female serial killers by Tori Telfer called Lady Killers: Deadly Women Throughout History to peruse and review on Goodreads and Amazon. The book won’t released until October 10, 2017, by Harper Perennial, and I am so thrilled to be one of the few who get to read it first.

Some of the murderers/murderesses have been discussed on My Favorite Murder by Georgia and Karen but some are brand new to me.

From the back cover:
When you think of serial killers throughout history the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy but what about Tilly Klimek, Moulay Hassen and Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators, in fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference that, “There are no female serial killers.”

Lady Killers, based on the popular online series that appeared on Jezebel and The Hairpin, disputes that claim and offers 14 gruesome examples as evidence. Though largely forgotten by history, female serial killers such as Erzsebet Bathory, Nannie Doss, Mary Ann Cotton, and Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova rival their male counterparts and cunning, cruelty, and appetite for destruction.

Each chapter explores the crimes and history of a different subject and then proceeds to unpack her legacy and her portrayal in the media, as well as the stereotypes and sexist clichés that inevitably surround her. The first book to examine female serial killers through a feminist lens with a witty and dryly humorous tone lady killers dismisses explanations (she was hormonal, she did it for love, a man made her do it) and tired tropes (she was a femme fatale, a black widow, a witch) delving into the complex reality of a female aggression and predation. Featuring 14 illustrations from Dame Darcy, Lady Killers is a blood curdling, insightful, and irresistible journey into the heart of darkness.

Tori Telfer is a full-time freelance writer whose work has appeared in Salon, Vice, Jezebel, The Hairpin, Good Magazine, Bustle, barnesandnoble.com, Chicago Magazine, and elsewhere. She is a Pushcart nominee and the recipient of the Edwin L. Shuman Fiction Award. She has written, directed, and produced independent plays on both Chicago and Los Angeles.

The Blood Countess: Erzsebet Bathory
The Giggling Grandma: Nannie Doss
The Worst Woman on Earth: Lizzie Halliday
Devil in the Shape of a Saint: Elizabeth Ridgeway
Vipers: Raya and Sakina
The Wretched Woman: Mary Ann Cotton
The Tormentor: Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova

High Priestess of the Bluebeard Clique: Tillie Klimek
Sorceress of Kilkenny: Alice Kyteler
Beautiful Throat Cutter: Kate Bender
The Angel Makers of Nagyrev
Queen of Poisoners: Marie-Madeleine, the Marquis de Brinvilliers

It looked as if The Angel Makers of Nagyrev wasn’t included in the texts, though it is listed in the contents and notes. However, they are on the pages following the chapter and heading Beautiful Throat Cutter. I had mistakenly thought it wasn't included before. Hopefully, that oversight and will be corrected in the final copy. There were a few punctuation errors in the book and I had intended to leave them in the copy above but allowed Grammarly to correct them without thinking. But that's why they pay the editors the big bucks.

Needless to say, I can’t wait to delve deep in this book and read my little Murderino heart out. I am nearly through the book and will update with a review once I have completed it.

Unnatural Causes
By Richard Shepherd
⭐️⭐️⭐️

He has performed over 23,000 autopsies, including some of the most high-profile cases of recent times; the Hungerford Massacre, the Princess Diana inquiry, and 9/11.

He has faced serial killers, natural disaster, 'perfect murders' and freak accidents.

His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent, and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads.

Yet all this has come at a huge personal cost.

This was an interesting read at the start but somewhere in the middle I got a little bored. May be a moody thing a 2.5/3 star read!

The Characters
The Perfect Husband is a perfect novel
I have an admission to make. I am a true crime buff.

I love reading about unsolved mysteries, solved mysteries and everything between. I read books, listen to podcasts, and belong to several amateur sleuth blogs. Yes. I even belong to the Hunt A Killer curated box mystery. There. I've admitted it.

In the world of true crime my biggest passion is serial killers. Cliche, perhaps, but it's true.
I, like many, always asked myself about the family that surrounds serial killers; both before and after they are caught. Most importantly, what about the wives of serial killers? Lisa Gardner attempts to answer this question.

The thing I love most about Lisa Gardner's work is that she takes the time and effort to research before she even puts words to page. It is clear by the lingo that she uses and the characters that she builds that Gardner talked to actual law enforcement officials, and really listens to what they do.

The main character is the abused and traumatized wife of a sadistic serial killer. She is attempting to learn to protect herself and in so doing turns tot he meanest mercenary that she can find to teach her. She wants to learn to fight and shoot so that she can handle the man that law enforcement lost, the husband who is obsessed with killing her.

I absolutely adored this book, and immediately went out and bought three more of her novels.

The main female character is suffering from battered woman's syndrome. She is trying her best to cast off the mental and physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her narcissistic and criminal spouse.

The mercenary she turns to...has issues. He is, in his own way, as broken and screwed up as our heroine. But, through her, he begins to give a damn again.

The killer, our heroine's former husband, is so fantastically well done that it is almost too easy to picture him on the front page of a newspaper, or scattered across social media blogs.

It's fantastic. I recommend this to anyone who likes female protagonists, serial killers, or thrillers.

There is so much out there on this stuff I was reluctant to watch. Now I'm hooked! Not for people who are offended by language and pretty graphic descriptions of violent crimes. I like how they delve into the personal lives of each task force member to see how listening to these serial killers is so emotionally draining and seriously affecting their relationships. Fascinating look into how profiling and forensics have evolved since the 70's.

I enjoyed this series but it's not as good as the book! Was quite taken aback by the difference between them actually, but nonetheless, the psychology was incredible, especially when concentrating on Holden Ford. Would definitely recommend the book though, you get to enjoy the difference cases in more detail
