The Shakespeare Stories: Henry V, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet by Andrew Matthews presents four of William Shakespeare’s famous plays in an easy-to-digest format for kids. Accompanied by Tony Ross’ illustrations, Matthews re-imagines these Shakespearean plays as short stories more akin to classic fairy tales.

Matthews manages to take some of the most plot-heavy and confusing Shakespeare plays and break them down to their most basic elements. The language is easy to follow without lacking intellect or wit, and he stays true to Shakespeare’s concepts and characters. Illustrated short stories for kids are a no-brainer for getting children interested in William Shakespeare, and Matthews was smart to dive into the genre. He isn’t reinventing the wheel, but he is making the wheel accessible to a wide range of audiences.

I like how it has pictures, gives the cast and a quote from the original play. Then it tells the story and finishes up with an explanation of what just happened and some history of Shakespeare and the play.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
1998 | Comedy, History, Romance
Award-winning 1998 film (supposedly) telling the story of how Shakespeare - here, suffering from writers block - came to write the tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet' (which, here, starts life as 'Romeo and Ethel the Pirate King's daughter'), as well as where he gets inspiration for several of his other plays from.

Whilst this is a bit slow starting, it gets better once the plot starts moving, roughly half an hour or so into it, with the introduction of (a very young) Gwyneth Paltrow as Lady Viola who - in the best traditions of Shakespeare - wants to become an actor herself, a role forbidden to females of the time, and so is forced to 'go undercover', pretending to be a young man.

Sound familiar?

It's a plot device Shakespeare would return to, time and time again.

Absolutely insanely good
I am not going to write loads, just this. Kids learn about Shakespeare at school. This is as good and masterful as that. This is genius

"Romeo + Juliet, the Baz Luhrmann version with DiCaprio. One of my faves; I thought it was an incredible take on Shakespeare. It was exciting, and DiCaprio’s performance in it is fantastic, and Mercutio’s Queen Mab speech is brilliant."

"I’ve never seen Shakespeare so easily digestible. Everything is so perfectly played and [Kenneth Branagh] is so wonderful. For me, it’s unparalleled. Every actor is just so fine tuned and so good. I love every inch of that movie."

I love Shakespeare and I love comic books. So when I saw this I thought I was onto a win. And I was, they go together like Peanut Butter and jam! I will definitely be getting the rest of the collection.
