MissCagey (2652 KP) rated The Wrestler (2008) in Movies

This is one of the saddest films I have ever seen. You can't help but like Randy and you keep rooting for him hoping his bad luck will change. It seems to for a short while which makes it all the harder when it goes downhill again. It is slow but that allows the film to "breathe" somewhat and I liked that it was not rushed.

WE STAN
I love I love I love. we stan. Look at this diversity! A hijabi Muslim girl, MULTIPLE GAY BOIS, a gay girl, punk, POCs, and so, so, so much more. It's gorgeous, so, so perfect, I stg I binged it. I really wished there were more episodes a season, considering they're all so short. Otherwise, it was a beautiful show, and very, very, very great.

Harsh truth
Beautifully illustrated by Alice Tait, Pam Ayres' poem about The Last Hedgehog is a clever set of verses about the demise of the hedgehog population. Although the rhyme makes readers want to laugh, it highlights the dangers to hedgehogs caused by contemporary society. With this short book, Ayres hopes to open the eyes of the ignorant and change people's attitudes to nature.
AT (1676 KP) rated Congratulations, by the way in Books

This was George Saunders' convocation speech that he gave at Syracuse University. He speaks about kindness, and being kind throughout your lifetime. It was a nice speech, but I wasn't as moved as I thought I'd be. I think it's because I recently read Mr. Saunders' short story, Fox 8. Fox 8 was a million times more of an emotional event for me than this speech was.
David McK (3425 KP) rated Wounds of Honour (Empire, #1) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
I don't know why, but for some reason: I just couldn't get into this book.
While it's not the worst I've ever read, I found it to actually be quite heavy going: even the action scenes seemed, to me, to be void of any danger or excitement, while the plot seemed pedestrian at best.
In short: don't think I'll be rushing out to buy the sequel!

David McK (3425 KP) rated Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Other Tales in Books
Jan 30, 2019
One of the classics of English literature, this short story is also by the same author who wrote "Treasure Island" (amongst others).
What I found interesting, though, is in how Mr Hyde is described within: unlike the malformed gaint monstrosity that is familiar form TV and film, Hyde is actually described as younger than Jekyll and of a lesser stature, while still projecting an aura of evil.

Thanks to NetGalley and Hachette books for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book delightful. It was easy to understand without being condescending and has really cute illustrations.
The vignettes are short and sweet and the book is packed with information.
I would definitely recommend this book to animal lovers with a good sense of humor.

Book Divas (227 KP) rated With Wicked Intent: Haunted House (The Haunting of Briar Park Book 2) in Books

This was over before I even knew it and my heart is threatening to pound straight through my chest. Why do I persist in reading these things right before bedtime is a mystery to me but man, this short story was fantastic and packs one heck of a fright. I am completely enthralled with the authors and look forward to devouring more of these books.
EmersonRose (320 KP) rated The Yellow Wall-Paper in Books

The Yellow Wallpaper is an exquisitely written short story that captures perfectly the feelings of anxiety. It is hard to say that I enjoyed reading this story only because the feelings of reading it leave you filled with a sick anxiety. You cannot help but feel along with the main character. This is a beautiful story that I would highly recommend giving a read.
