Okay, look - I'm a straight man... but I'd let Robert Redford fuck *me* for a million dollars. First hour >>> second hour, but some seriously luscious looking pulp from one of the resounding kings of shooting gorgeous people looking into picturesque backgrounds. Still to date one of my favorite film premises, so it's a shame that it goes for a more conventional romance and doesn't hold all its weight in the second half like it did in the much more mysterious, sick intrigue of the first. God-level Redford, I'd like to think this is what Alexander Pierce from 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘳 did in his free time. Harrelson overreacting to everything is fucking hilarious, can't believe they played all this deliciously goofy portent straight. Speaking of which, the fact that we're supposed to empathize with either of these assholes is demeaning. Though as a result, rather than viewing this perhaps deservedly maligned piece as outright misogyny - imo I think this works best at showing the lengths either extreme of man will go to treat women like property, a vaguely cartoonish version mind you, but it isn't too far off from the unfortunate reality. Lurid, engaging, occasionally funny (intentional and not so) 90s psychopathic businessman trash.

A nasty, gushing open wound of a movie - real gnarly dirtbag exploitation on display and easily one of the dopest film heroines ever put on screen. The American military as a grotesque, deformed monster of its former self - shambling around causing havoc in its wake, using its past achievements to justify its new warped existence. Also cool lady has machine gun for leg. Plants its sickness firmly into the ground before the zombies even start showing up, and then we get those reliably exemplary Nicotero effects - and they sure aren't afraid to use them. Dear God almighty is there a *lot* of blood, pus, rotting flesh, and guts in this and it all looks top-notch. Even by this genre's standards this leans hard into depraved splatfest mode. The last thirty minutes are seriously some of the best that cinema has ever created - and every Tarantino scene is the sort of masterclass revolting slime that makes you feel physically sick. The type of movie Rodriguez was born to direct - orgasmically evocative of the 𝘐 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦 era of gorecore films while also totally remaining its own thing with a formidable vigor and sense of self. Prestige filth.

Apparently, they’ve tried kissing and making up, and everything else under the sun. But nothing seems to make them happy.
Later, the woman admits that she and her partner used to make each other happy, but now they’re not happy anymore because they can’t compromise.

I’m going to have to stop saying that I can’t read non-fiction, because clearly I can. This book was a quick, addictive read, and I vacillated between feeling voyeuristic and horrified. Maggie’s encounter with a man whilst she was walking on a mountain path, resulted in me telling my husband all about it, in detail. He asked me why I was reading it, it sounded horrifying (it was, but that’s where I stopped listening to him!). Another encounter whilst backpacking in South America had me holding my breath, and her illness as a child was upsetting in a different way - as all stories involving sick children do now that I have my own. The last story about her daughters serious allergies and many ‘blue light’ dashes to hospital, resounded with me in particular, and I found myself close to tears. Whilst my own child’s medical condition isn’t life threatening, he has certainly been hospitalised, had serious operations, and had his near death experience (luckily just the one). This is traumatic enough, but to have to be ever vigilant must be emotionally and physically exhausting.
I hesitate to use the word ‘wonderful’ when talking about a book about seventeen near death experiences, but I loved reading it, and would definitely recommend it.
