Destiny (8 KP) rated George's Marvellous Medicine in Books
Jan 5, 2018
Where I found this book: I read The BFG in 3rd grade and basically fell in love with Roald Dahl. I went to my local library very soon after and looked for any Roald Dahl book. I came back with George’s Marvelous Medicine and I’m the better for it.
How it’s written: From George’s perspective, you get to see how awful his grandmother is and his hilarious remedy for it. Then read as the madness continues when it’s time to give grandma more medicine.
What I like about this book: For me, it was one of the funniest things I had read up to that point. My own grandma would say rude things to me and my sisters, which I guess is why I was drawn to this book. A combination of the hilarious writing and the wonderful plot had me absorbed by this book when I was young.
Final Thoughts: There is always something so ridiculous and curious about Roald Dahl’s work. He really knew how to make reading fun.

Mark Halpern (153 KP) rated The Godfather (1972) in Movies

EPIC
Best Mafia story ever written. The Godfather is not just a classic it is a must watch movie for every movie goer ever. 3 of the most iconic lines in movie history come from this movie. The cast is not just a whose who, it is a plethora of stars who make this film in my top five favorite movies ever.
The story of a young Italian who chooses to go into the army and not deal with the family businesses in any way comes home to his sisters wedding to be with family. Not two days later chain events happen that changes his point of view on the family and makes him join. He rises to power not only with in the family but, against other mafia familes and becomes most feared.
This movie shows one of the greatest transformations of a character ever in film history. A hero who becomes a villain for the right reasons you could say. This movie spawns two sequels. The second being better than the first and the third really just closes the story out but, this story will always be the best mafia story ever written.

Not quite in the same league as other Japanese animations
Just like those crazy Studio Ghibli films of fantastic tales and amazing creatures, Laika productions (famous for Coraline) has created a stop motion animation using Japanese folklore. Now as a fan of Ghibli, I can say that this is no way near that league although the animation is always amazing to behold.
The story is rather tragic of a boy from a magical powerful family, who has escaped with his mother as a baby, losing an eye in the process, and growing up to play an instrument that has the power to control paper. Both he and his mother are poor, livingin a cave, hiding away from this family - his father has also perished in this initial battle. However, they are found and his mother gives him her powers to escape and try and find a way of defeating her sisters and father.
It's a quest-based film, filled with perilous obstacles and while it was sad at times - I just don't think it was as heartfelt as other Japanese animations. The voices of Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron is always fantastic to hear though.

Auburn (57 KP) rated Here There Are Monsters in Books
Apr 10, 2019
I was lucky enough to be able to read an early copy of this. This is outside of my normal genre but the cover called to me. It is so well done that anyone who sees it will want to pick it up and see what it entails. It definitely fits that vibe of the cover. It is dark, spooky, and so goth.
When a bone monster of Skyes making tells her how to get her sister, whom she lost on her watch, back it all goes to heck. You jump right in only to be smacked by a brick wall. That wall is six months in the past. I dislike books that jump you forwards and backwards between chapters. It jarrs me and kind of ruins the continuity. The two main characters, the sisters, are little jerks. Neither of them really has any redeeming qualities. They are hard to like and I did not enjoy the fact that neither of them grows.
While it says horror it has more story than straight horror.
Thank you for letting me read an early copy on Netgalley.

One of the Best

My husband made me watch this one evening when we were first moved in together and usually the films he has made me watch haven't gone well!
I saw how old the film was and as I am a classic film lover I gave it a try and it has become one of my favourite films of all time!
The acting is superb, just raw talent and real passion.
I definitely think this film deserves it's high rating on rotten tomatoes and IMdb, it had everything in it that makes a good film and more. It has me laughing, crying, cringing, angry, sad and rooting for Andy and Red!
In the 'Bad' section I have only included one issue I have but that is because of how much you start to like the character of Andy. To see him go through what he did in the film genuinely breaks my heart every time I watch it.
If you haven't seen this film, Please get watching, I'm certain you won't regret it!

Chelsee R Clawson (23 KP) rated Call the Midwife - Season 1 in TV
Mar 6, 2018
What a show!
Now I am rather late to the whole call the midwife scene. From the snippets that I've seen when my mother watches the show its babies, babies and more babies! Oh but how wrong could I be. This series not only deals with childbirth it also delves into the changing times and trials of the 1950s era as this series is based on true memoirs, you get a taste of the reality that everyday people were having to go through both from best practices in medicine to running the household its truly remarkable and I regret not watching it sooner! The the midwifes and sisters are outstanding and as the series goes on each person's story is slowly unravelled bit by tiny bit as their experience grows so does your love for each and every member of the cast. I have now progressed to series two and will continue to watch each season until I am fully up to date and I can tell you now a few binge watching sessions will be in order, like chocolate I just can't get enough!
I very much enjoyed this novel. The story was so fresh and different than what I have been reading recently. Plus, it's a standalone!!
I enjoyed how Mead attempts to put words to gaining the ability of hearing after coming from a society that has been deaf for centuries. It explored how a person would be able to deal with suddenly being able to hear out of nowhere.
Though I enjoyed this novel, it was not my favorite of hers. There were moments, especially at the end, that I would have liked to see expanded and explained more. I felt like there wasn't enough build up to it for the ending she gave it. It was very reminiscent of a fairy tale where everything gets resolved very quickly.
I wished that more of the magical aspects that were introduced into the story were both introduced earlier and worked into the story more.
That being said, I loved the relationships between the characters, especially between the two sisters. Fei's relationship with Li Wei could have been built up and explained a bit more, thought.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but, like I said, it wasn't my favorite.

Caffeinated Fae (464 KP) rated Sorority in Books
Jul 12, 2018
If you're looking for a novel that has a true beginning, middle and end, this is not the book for you. Sorority by Genevieve Sly Crane tells the story of various sorority sisters in bite sized short stories. The story unwraps to reveal the story of Margot.
I went into this book expecting a full story and not various short stories. That in itself took me a bit to get used to. Though it wasn't a format I was expecting, I still enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and I liked that each person had their story to tell. I liked that I could relate to multiple characters and see their lives. I have to say, I'm glad I never had the urge to join a sorority. Though I did like the book I have one issue. My one main issue is that the book feels a little incomplete simply because there was no true end. I like having an ending so this book just doesn't sit right. It did work with the story though.
All in all, I enjoyed it.
**I received this book from NetGalley**

Caffeinated Fae (464 KP) rated My Soul to Keep (African Immortals, #1) in Books
Jul 12, 2018
I would give it more of a 4 1/2 star rating but I decided to round up. This was a very good book. It started off fairly slow but I'm glad that I stuck with it.
I will admit that I was fairly hesitant to start reading this book. My sisters kept pressuring me to read it and so I stated that I would have it read by thanksgiving. I do not deny that while reading it I kept thinking of the series that I am in the middle of, the book I finally bought after months of waiting, and the series that I want to restart.
All in all, Tananarive Due is an amazing author. I can see why it has been compared to Anne Rice's novels. I will definitely read the rest of the series when I find the time. The characters were very complex and realistic. This book definitely makes you look inside yourself and question what you would do in the situations that the characters were placed in. Though it did start out a little slow it gradually hooked me.
