Reading a Maeve Binchy book is so comforting. Like outside a cafe drinking strong coffee people-watching. This collection of stories is packed with insightful glimpses into people, women particularly and what makes them tick. There is often a thread running through the stories about wisdom and folly. Sometimes the stories got a little repetitive, but a sweet read.

"It is probably the only film that I’ve ever seen which has something like a perfect balance, which does not occur in filmmaking very often. You sense it sometimes in great music, but I haven’t experienced it in cinema, and it’s mind boggling. I don’t know how [Akira] Kurosawa did it. It’s still a mystery to me. That’s greatness."

"In my opinion James Purdy is the most underrated writer in American literature, probably because he was gay. His books are heart wrenching, brutal and sometimes flat-out mean-spirited but they are also incredibly beautiful and endlessly poetic. I'm not all that fond of books that make me cry but in Purdy's case, I don't mind."

"Cassavetes is the man. He changed filmmaking forever, in the most radical way. He is sensitive and loving in his approach. The acting is so good, sometimes you forget that it’s just a movie. The message is always love and the struggle it brings. The best part of this collection might even be the bonus documentary, A Constant Forge."

"If I’m going to be on a desert island with “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare,” believe me I’m going to need this book, too. The forest of his words is sometimes pretty thick, and having a dictionary helps illuminate your way. I use the dictionary all the time when I’m reading or working on scripts."

Is Club Dread funny? Sometimes. Is it gory? Fairly. Are some of the jokes gratuitously outdated? Almost definitely.
It might not be Broken Lizard's best work, but it's a fun enough slasher comedy, and is there's one thing I'm 100% certain about, is that Bill Paxton is an absolute treat in this movie, and that's good enough for me.
