We’ve all heard the story of Medea, and Rosie Hewlett has decided to tackle it from a different angle. History and stories of the time, written by men, aren’t particularly kind to women - especially when the woman in question is clever and has knowledge that the men don’t have. That’s why these powerful women in history and stories were portrayed as evil or as witches (and sometimes both).
Medea is shunned by her family because of her magic, so when the ever-so-attractive Jason turns up with an exit plan, Medea decides to help him escape and take her with him. She’s obsessed with him: he pays her attention, and she’s never had anyone pay her attention in a good way before. But as his ardour wanes and he realises that Medusa is a liability, he cheats on her in a big way - and Medea is enraged. She will have her revenge.
I don’t blame her.
I liked that we learn her motivation for her radical actions - and I empathised with her. The first person narrative certainly helped with that. I didn’t agree with how she went about her revenge, but it was effective 🤷🏼♀️. You don’t often read about Hekate, either. I’m hoping Nikita Gill’s new book will sort that out (and I have it on my kindle to read!).
This is a dark story. Medea is complex and flawed, but at the same time, she’s so interesting to read about. I’d really recommend this book! Female rage is always good to read about 😉

HUNTER'S HIDDEN CAMERA is a standalone story that deals with sensitive subjects, like mental health, taboo obsession, drugs, anxiety, self-harm, and homophobia.
This is the first book by this author I have read, so I had no idea about the writing style. I can say that it didn't really work for me. It is first person, present tense, which I usually don't mind, but this was very messy. I don't know if it is actually supposed to be a reflection of Hunter's mind - in which case, it worked very well!
The writing style changed occasionally from being a 'story' to being more like a play. Instead of reading it as paragraphs, it became 'Me:..., Emma:..., Blanca:..., Oscar:...' There was no explanation for the change; it just happened, sometimes with 'normal' sentences in the middle.
There are a lot of characters in here, from Hunter and his girlfriend, to his best friend and his girlfriend, to other friends, his brother, cousins, and forever missing parents. The number of characters helped with the messy feel of the book, too.
While I appreciate the hard work that has gone into writing this book, it isn't one that I particularly enjoyed. It is a fairly short book, though, and the chapters fly by at a fast pace.

This is the first book by this author I have read, so I had no idea about the writing style. I can say that it didn't really work for me. BROKEN FATES is the final book in the Severed Flames trilogy and gives a very satisfying conclusion to Vale's story.
Beginning from where Stolen Embers finished, Vale is on her own and doing everything in her power to rescue and protect her sister. Where are her dragons, I hear you ask? Well, they're doing their own thing.
All three of these books are full of spice and battles, and sometimes those things combine - I'm looking at you, Selene - and this one is no different. Everything that has happened has been building up to this book and it will take you on a rollercoaster ride as your emotions go through all the motions!
Now, a possible unpopular opinion - I really had had enough of the boys at the beginning of this one, Idris especially. Kian was and always will be my favourite and his self-realisation here only confirms that, although it took him long enough! And after they sort it out, they STILL think Vale is soft and fragile, not trusting in her or her abilities. I'm surprised I have any teeth left, I ground them that much!
Anyway, this story is completely outstanding from beginning to end and I have loved spending time in their world. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me, just in case you were wondering.

So, this is the fifth book in the series so I'm not going to rehash the synopsis and the previous four books for you. Instead, I will just launch straight into this one, although, be warned! It may contain mild spoilers from the first four books, but I'll try to keep it as generic as possible.
Adri is still grieving and reeling from what happened in Minnesota and as such, can't bring herself to be civil to Alec. He is trying to make things easier for her as he does understand but he is also dealing with a lot of pressure from every which way.
The story that is told inside this book is speeding up and gaining momentum. It is an action-packed book but there is still a thin trickle of romance for the die-hard romantics like me. Things are never straightforward for Adri and Alec, although I sometimes wish they could catch a break, and never more so than here. Instead of a love triangle, Dean has gone one further and made it a love quadrangle! I am really hoping that Alec and Adri get their HEA even though this is an alternate universe.
We have new threats, old threats, conspiracies, betrayal, and love - it's all here. This is a series that is getting better with each book. Highly recommended by me.

Asher and Olivia actually make a very good couple, although Asher does come across as a bit of a tool to begin. In his defence, he is injured and worried about his dog... but still. Olivia is traumatised as a bomb has just exploded nearby and people are injured and dying. The ability to control her healing talent is hard at the best of times but in circumstances like this, near impossible.
Due to Asher toning down his attitude, Olivia realises that he isn't actually as bad as she originally thought. Just in time too, as two Army Investigative Unit officers arrive on the scene. An unregistered Healer talent and a Cascadian barbarian would not go down well. Luckily they help each other and are able to leave. Things heat up pretty quickly after that although they both agree that it is only for a week, to begin with. They both have a history that makes them wary of the thought of commitment.
Cameo appearances are made by Neyla and Rickert as well as a few others from Book 1.
Well-written and fast-paced, Olivia and Asher work well and play hard. This is an intense and sometimes steamy novella which carries on perfectly with the Iron Portal series. Definitely recommended and looking forward to the next one.

Due to Asher toning down his attitude, Olivia realises that he isn't actually as bad as she originally thought. Just in time too, as two Army Investigative Unit officers arrive on the scene. An unregistered Healer talent and a Cascadian barbarian would not go down well. Luckily they help each other and are able to leave. Things heat up pretty quickly after that although they both agree that it is only for a week, to begin with. They both have a history that makes them wary of the thought of commitment.
