I love all her complicated-Southern-family books, but the protagonist of this one is a woman who makes a living as a comic book artist/graphic novelist, and also has weekly board game nights

"I guess lastly is Baby Doll by Elia Kazan, where Karl Malden plays a sexually inexperienced husband, and his wife plays him for a fool, pretending to be a 12-year-old nymphette. Again it’s a very Southern Gothic, surreal, sexual perversion escapade. It’s another film I’ve watched many times and find it very hilarious."

"How can you go wrong with a Tennessee Williams script (originally his play Orpheus Descending) directed by Sidney Lumet, with the great Anna Magnani, Joanne Woodward, and Marlon Brando (playing a retired guitar player named Snakeskin, who is trying to turn over a new leaf in a very racist southern town). An obscure classic."

Tootsie (1982)
Tootsie (1982)

"Tone, tone, tone. Even in the most touching moments, the movie never strays from the ridiculousness of Dustin Hoffman in panty hose, pancake makeup, a wig, and an exquisite Southern accent. And the heartfelt desperation of an out-of-work actor adds a perfectly acidic zing into what could have been a syrupy rom-com."

It’s not often anyone has the (albeit heartbreaking) luxury of being able to map out their own memorial, and Allman leaves us with his head held high and a record of rare beauty.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

"I know this film may seem out of place on this list, but for pure entertainment it’s my favorite. As a child I got to see this in Cinerama. Criterion did an incredible job mastering it, and I love all the extras on the Blu-ray—especially the maps of locations in southern California where it was shot."

Meeh, it's a good story but it falls flat in the fact in that the author figures you've read the earlier books in that world. So a lot of items/events are spoken of but never actually explained. Didn't really feel like a story but more like "here's part 1 with a cliffhanger". The only thing I've read from this author is Southern Fried Dragon.

While it is excellent work, this is not really an entertainment read. Ward lays out so much in story far more powerfully than any essay on American race relations, trauma, privilege, and rural southern life ever could. It was chilling, moving, eyeopening for me. I definitely want to read Ward's other books.

The audiobook is very well done as well, read by a talented cast.

Awful Southern/Louisiana accents (1 more)
Not enough Alexander Skarsgård
So, since I have all the time in the world now, I decided to re-watch True Blood, but, I had to go old school because I am not subscribing to another services. Luckily, I own the first four seasons.
The first season sets up the world of True Blood, the vamps had come out of the closet and some drink the artificial True Blood. Apparently, this Bon Temps town is a hot bed for magical creatures, as the series progresses.
Sookie is the main character, and has a silly name. She can reads minds, and discovers that it doesn't apply to vamps when Bill comes strolling in.
Then someone's going around, killing chicks that associate with vamps in various ways. This is essentially a mystery, and from what I can recall, it does an ok job of following the book. The killer begins to become more obvious as the season goes on, and it's resolved in a super dramatic way.
As mentioned, the Southern/Louisiana accents are pretty bad and annoying to someone from the South, NOT ALL SOUTHERN STATES HAVE THE SAME ACCENTS. Out of all of the actors, Ryan Kwanten is the best.
Of course, there's gratuitous sex, this is an HBO show, but I just fast forward through all of that crap. It really makes the episodes much shorter.
