Space, its deep man!
356. Ad Astra. BRAAAD PIIITTTT'S INNNN SPPPAAACCCCEEEEE. Anyone? Anyone? I'm old. Anyways, so a pretty awesome space adventure flick, that's not really about a space adventure. There's messages in there man, like if humans start living in space, it will eventually be covered in billboards and fought over for resources just like home, and of course the overall message of... Well you have to see it. Back to the space adventure part. The future, man has ventured out into the solar system, and now that solar system is being smacked upside the head with a surge of energy causing all kinds of death and destruction, and it looks like its all stemming from the Lima project, headed by Clifford McBride, who's way out there in the outer solar system searching for life. So the people in charge send his son Roy McBride, another genius astronaut to find out what happened out there. On the way to set up a long distance call to his dad from Mars, Roy fights space pirates on the moon, starved baboons on a abandoned research facility, even secretly stows away aboard a spaceship to commander it to go save daddy!! And in the end, Roy may find some answers he was looking for! Definitely worth a watch in IMAX!! Filmbufftim on FB.

I strongly recommend his other 6 books (the First Law trilogy and three standalone books set in the same world), plus there is a set of short stories (Sharp Ends) but I haven't read those yet. I can't say if they are similar to Half a King or not but I loved them, a real breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre. Hope you enjoy (if you do I recommend following up with Luke Scull's Grim Company trilogy and then get stuck in to Mark Lawrence)!

I will definitely look into him more as I really like Half a King so far and from my usual authors his style is quickly becoming a favourite of mine.

Ad Astra (Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones) was just awful. More Vauxhall Astra than Interstellar. Fails the Bechdel test and the male equivalent, no one says anything interesting to another human. Not even saved by a surprise monkey attack and some spritely Moon pirates. Looked good in places but was severely lacking in the intelligent sci-fi department, which is a major flaw given the billing. It seems this is getting highly rated because everyone likes its star (and producer) Brad Pitt, and they presume him staring into deep space looking morose and quizzical makes this a profound movie - it doesn't.
A huge let-down, considering the talent involved.

An epic comedy space drama
Final Space flashed up a few times for me as a recommended show on Netflix. As the trailer automatically played, it came across as some kind of Futurama/Rick and Morty wannabee, with annoying characters. So I ignored it, until one day I just decided to give it a go. And, it was slightly annoying for a while. But, it was also slightly funny at times too, and I remember feeling a bit like that about the first episode of Rick and Morty, so I stuck with it a little bit longer. I'm so glad I did.

Final Space is a sprawling, epic space adventure. Set across 10 episodes, each one continuing the story, starting with a teaser of the final episode, and ending with a cliffhanger. Huge space battles, tonnes of action, drama, sadness, and even some romance. There's an evil bad guy, plenty of hilarious characters, and a cute little planet destroying alien, who now has his own plush toy (added to my Christmas list...). And it all builds to ask incredible, tension filled finale with an even bigger cliffhanger. I freakin loved this show...

Long scenes of drifting through space. Amazing on an IMAX screen. (0 more)
Plot sometimes seems like an afterthought (see above long images of drifting through space.) This is not a neat ending. You will most likely be confused. (0 more)
Visit space at your local IMAX
This review is specifically about the IMAX re-release in 2018.

Never having seen this film before, I was psyched to hear it was coming to IMAX. Raised in museums, I have a strong predisposition to watch movies set in space or in the ocean on IMAX screens. In that respect, this movie does not disappoint. If your idea of a great time is watching space craft drift through space to classical music on a screen so big you feel like you’re there, you will LOVE this movie. The cinematography is stunning, and I found myself enjoying shifting back and forth between space and 1960’s set design. 2001 is, if nothing else, a feast on for the eyes.
This movie has a reputation for being confusing, and it does earn it. This is particularly true of the last half our or so.
Because this was originally made for Cinerama (a style that was projected onto a heavily curved screen using 3 synchronized projectors) a few scenes looked a little squished or bent in places. It’s barely noticable, and probably unavoidable in translating from the curved to flat screen. Still, this was remarkably well done.
Still, regardless what you think of the story and meaning of this film, you will be doing yourself a favor to see it in IMAX before it leaves!
