ClareR (5911 KP) rated Restless Dolly Maunder in Books
Jul 20, 2024
Dolly Maunder is most definitely restless. She wants more than the hand that life has dealt her - and as a female whose parents work on a farm, she is expected to get married and have children who will work on a farm.
Dolly is determined, and that’s what shows throughout this book. When her parents take away the chance for her to become a teacher, she finds other ways to change her life. She’s a force of nature! I loved Dolly’s spirit. She did come across as obstinate and single minded, neither of which is a terrible thing for someone with ambition. But it’s not easy for those who have to live with her!
This is a pretty wide-sweeping novel, from Dolly’s childhood until her old age, and it still seemed to be over too soon. It was so interesting to learn about the Australian way of life from just before WWI to after WWII, and Dolly moves around enough for the reader to see different areas of Australia.
There’s a lot of emotion in this book, and when you read the authors note at the end, you’ll see why. Recommended.

Alice (12 KP) rated The Dead Seekers (Dead Seekers, #1) in Books

The Dead Seekers is the first in a new series from Barb & J.C. Hendee which follows in the same vein as their Noble Dead series with strong characters and a good storyline. The Dead Seekers follows Tris - or as he is known throughout the book The Dead’s Man – a ghost hunter with the ability to see, interact with and control the dead after he was stillborn; and Mari, a shape-changing gypsy/traveller (known as a Mondyalitko) whose parents were killed when Tris was a child outside of his ancestral home who is convinced that The Dead’s Man is responsible.
The story begins with the birth/death of Tris and subsequent miracle of his rebirth and with the slaughter of Mari’s family a few years later. It then follows Tris as he performs his job as a ghost hunter and banisher of nasty spirits; Mari manages to track him down after a prolonged period of hunting him herself and follows him to his next job which involves the banishing of a spirit who has been kept on this plane against her will by her mother.
Mari saves Tris’ life the first night they are together as no one else can kill her prey and then continues to save his life on many occasions throughout the remainder of the book which is at odds with her nature to kill him as she believes he is the one responsible for murdering her family when she was a child – in a way, he is which is explained really well later on in the book at the end when their investigations into the spirit of the town take them further afield to a city barracks where several people are dying in odd manners.
The depiction of the ghosts were in themselves quite good, particularly how they weren’t depicted as what I refer to as basic ghosts but instead each one had a description of how they actually died – for example head wounds or missing limbs etc. which I quite liked. I also liked the tension between Tris and Mari which was eventually eased towards the end of the book once Mari realised who and what Tris actually was. The description of Mari as her other side was also written exceedingly well with a more animal personality at the forefront rather than the human side of her as with most shape-changers.
In all, it was an interesting concept with a couple of nifty little bits here and there that I liked. I look forward to the next installment.

Lee (2222 KP) rated The Christmas Chronicles (2018) in Movies
Nov 25, 2018
Teddy and Kate Pierce have had a tough year. We see home movies of most of their Christmas's growing up, showing the good fun times with their parents. And then we see this Christmas. They've lost their dad, mum going out to work while Kate helps around the house and Teddy going out with friends, stealing cars and getting into trouble. When mum has to work on Christmas Eve night, the kids are left home alone and Christmas looks like being very different from previous years. While Kate watches those old Christmas movies, she notices a mysterious arm briefly appearing in the corner of the screen and is convinced they'd captured Santa Claus on camera. Enlisting the help of brother Teddy, they decide to try and catch Santa on camera once more. Things don't end up going quite according to plan though and they end up crash landing with Santa somewhere in Chicago. The reindeer came loose during their descent and are lost in the city. Santa's hat, which helps him zip around and teleport down chimneys, also blew off during the fall. Christmas is in jeopardy and Santa and his two new helpers need to fix it. We get car chases, badass little elves and Santa in jail wearing shades while playing the piano and belting out Christmas tunes, accompanied by backing singers!
As with any Christmas film that's introducing us to a new Santa and a new vision of the world he lives in, it takes a little while to get used to. Luckily, this one doesn't take long, and Kurt Russell is a very believable and enjoyable Santa who doesn't do ho-ho-ho's. The one thing that worried me from the trailer were the elves, who looked like they were going to be annoying little CGI characters. Luckily, they're used sparingly but effectively and were a lot of fun.
The whole Christmas in jeopardy plot is a fairly familiar one, having been done time and again over the years. But I actually really enjoyed this latest spin. Good fun, a bit of emotional stuff at the end and a nice surprise cameo to finish things off. Definitely got me in the Christmas spirit

Darren (1599 KP) rated I Like Me (2018) in Movies
Sep 13, 2019
Performances – Sue Schaffel and Anna Fagan take the leading roles, they show us great chemistry through the film as they both have to show the ups and downs of their lives. Chris Kozlowski will get most of the laughs in the film.
Story – The story here follows a free spirit that returns to her home town, where she tries to put her life back together with her self-help book making her an internet sensation, but can she fix her own life before it is too late. This is a story that does focus on the idea that people will need help in everybody life, people might turn to books, but in reality it will always be yourself that helps the most. We do see how people can go off the rails and will try to find their own directions, while we will also people that seem to be grounded, but lack direction. We do get the important messages here and by the end of the film you will understand the meaning behind everything in the story.
Comedy – The comedy in the film comes from Maggie’s action and a lot comes from Luke just trying to be a good husband without ever siding with anybody.
Settings – The film keeps the settings simple enough being everyday home locations, until we go to the disco bowling which adds the colour and fun to the life of the characters.
Scene of the Movie – Disco bowling.
That Moment That Annoyed Me – There could have been more on Maggie’s childhood, like was she raised with Hannah, who was her mother.
Final Thoughts – This is a fun comedy that does have a life message involved, it will get the laughs and has strong performances throughout.
Overall: Fun comedy.
