"I’m choosing Breillat’s film because it pulls me in and disturbs me. I’ll never forget that long push-and-pull seduction scene in the bedroom, which Breillat re-created in 2002’s Sex Is Comedy, or the sense of mounting menace that finally explodes. I don’t know how she does it, but she coaxes her actors into very private, intimate places. I imagine the process is born of deep trust, but it’s tough. As a director, it’s difficult to push people that far. Take this as a stand-in for many other films directed by women that, for whatever reason, aren’t in this collection: Claire Denis’s Beau travail being the obvious one that comes to mind, though there are many others."

"I was doing an assistant editor job in Prague for three months, and I brought with me about fifteen Bergman DVDs. Bizarrely, I was working on Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson during the day and coming home to Persona in the evening. It was not necessarily good for my state of mind, but it was an amazing cinematic education. It’s virtually impossible to choose a favorite from his films, so I’ll choose two. I do think, though, that Cries and Whispers sums up what it means to be human—the moment when Agnes screams out in agony to her sisters as they stand by her deathbed “Can anyone help me?” and of course they can’t, or they won’t. Holy fuck."

Tissues! I need more tissues!

Jeez! I really need to install a box (or three) of tissues on my night stand, or maybe just a bucket for me to cry into. I was just getting over one sad bit when I'd start all over again. And it was those unpretty, snotty tears too.

Ike, George, like Charlotte I have fallen for both of you too. And now, even after finishing the story I want to sob all over again. It's so sad...sniffle

After enjoying this so much, despite all the crying, I really wouldn't mind reading more books by the author.

Let me start by addressing the Elephant in the room.

I know the games exist.

I've never played them (Xbox exclusive, I prefer PlaySatation).

So I can't compare and contrast with the source material, although I know plenty were up in arms over the liberties taken and the fact that the Master Chief seems to spend about 90% of his time wandering around with his helmet off!

Setting that aside, however, I did find this to be generally engaging - no so much the Dune stand-in Kwan Ha segments - with some episodes better than others.

Interested to see where it goes from here!

Another bleak British belter
British cinema tends to be a)about working class people and b) be very miserable. I had a group of American friends staying over and shared with then a selection of British films. They all admitted to feeling suicidal at the end of it.

Some people will watch Funny Cow and expect a rip roaring comedy about a female stand up comedian. That it is not. This is the story of a working class rebel fighting domestic violence and oppression by seeing the funny side. It is brave and probably be very misunderstood by most. For me it was a poignant reminder of the fight some people have to be heard. A brave and strong film.
