I didn't know what I would think about this book when I picked it up. I had found out about it through people recommending it online through my tumblr when I asked for a new fairy tale book to read. I was not disappointed.
This was interesting because it was not really happy. It hearkened back to the Grimm brother's fairy tales in that respect. There were some Russian fairy tale influences I could feel throughout here when I was reading.
I loved how dark the characters were. They felt very fleshed out and very well written. Great job.
The plot was really nice and, again, well written. Not too many slow parts, though there were a few. I still enjoyed it.
I love the fact that it's a standalone so I can have it all wrapped up. I think I may look up her other books.

Hazel (2934 KP) rated Hard Prejudice (Dan Reno Novel #5) in Books

Gritty Read
I haven't read any of the other books in this series so started reading worrying whether coming in at book number 5 was a mistake I am happy to say ... it wasn't ... it can easily be read as a standalone.
Well written at great pace with action and intrigue aplenty, this book is great. It does deal with the uncomfortable subject of rape and, I have to warn you, there is a particularly grim and disturbing section but this can't be avoided and helps to put you in the mindset of the main characters of Dan and Cody who go to great lengths to get justice.
This is a gritty read that pulls no punches and I would most definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a a book that has non-stop action.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for my copy in return for an unbiased review.

Merissa (12069 KP) rated Traitor (Maelstrom Chronicles, #2) in Books
Dec 17, 2018
I received this book from Entangled Publishing in return for a fair and honest review.
This is a complex and intricate science fiction story with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure. It is the second book in the series although it can be read as a standalone (as I have) and I don't feel that you lose too much by doing so. It also has a considerably large character list for you to keep track of. Traitor is quite a long book so you get a lot of book for your buck.
On the whole, this was an enjoyable read with lots of different opinions, points of view and action spots to keep you interested. It is well-written at a steady pace, building up to the climax. For lovers of Sci-Fi, I can definitely recommend it.

TravelersWife4Life (31 KP) rated Taking Chances (The Chances Series Book 2) in Books

Taking chance by Traci Wooden-Carlisle was a great example of its title; It is a book about taking chances. It is the second book in the Chances Series, but it can be read as a standalone. This is my first time reading a book by Traci Wooden-Carlisle and I loved her writing style, it is conversational and built with good detail.
Andrew and Pietra (Which is a cool name, but I had to look up how to say it!) is a classic unrequired love/friends to lovers’ type storyline that was engaging, heartfelt, and had some deep thought stirring moments. I enjoyed their banter back and forth, Andrews's culture was fascinating, and I truly loved Pietra’s patience with Andrew through everything. It was a good culturally diverse book that kept me interested and I did not put it down until I finished!

This had every likelihood of being a great read for me but for some reason I just didn't get into it. I didn't know it was a sequel/part of a series until reading others reviews on here, maybe it doesn't work as a standalone book for me. I felt the first 250 pages were quite boring and drawn out with unnecessary uses of media e.g. maps of where everything was in the town and social media clippings. I found DI Fawley to be unbelievable and dry, I did wonder if the author realised this and manufactured the change in sarge, which is when the pace subsequently picked up. Segments were too short and it was hard to get into the characters. The storyline was clever and well thought out with lots of twists and turns.
Hazel (2934 KP) rated Cruel Acts (Maeve Kerrigan #8) in Books
Sep 19, 2019
Once again, I find myself enthusing about one of Jane Casey's books starring the unparalleled partnership of Detectives Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent. This might be the 8th outing in this series, but it doesn't show and remains fresh and a riveting read from start to finish. I won't go into any of the plot as the blurb explains it well enough and to say more would give the game away but what I will advise is that you be prepared for twists and turns, tension and scenes of peril!
With fantastic characters, a gripping plot and enough back story so it can be read as a standalone, this is one not to be missed for all you fans of police-procedural/crime/suspense/thriller/etc/etc., lovers out there.
Thank you once again to the Publisher via NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.
