Rent-A-Pal certainly has that 90s vibe to it as lonely bachelor named David (Brian Landis Folkins) is looking for an escape from the day-to-day drudgery of caring for his ageing mother (Kathleen Brady). His only escape is the chance to find a partner through a video dating service but he discovers a strange VHS tape called Rent-A-Pal.

Hosted by the charming and charismatic Andy (Wil Wheaton – Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory, Stand By Me), the tape offers him what he yearns for, some much-needed friendship. But finding a Pal comes at a cost.

There's a long-running gag about Star Trek, how it's always the Red Shirts (security) who end up killed on the away missions, most of which - quite often - include crew who have no call being there (why, for instance, does the captain go so often?)

That's the starting point for this novel, which imagines that the lower-deck crew are well aware of this fact, and thus do their utmost to avoid ever being selected to go on an away mission.

Very self-aware, in other words, although it could probably do with being a little bit shorter than it actually is - drop the Codas at the end, maybe?

Simon Pegg recommended Taxi Driver (1976) in Movies (curated)

Taxi Driver (1976)
Taxi Driver (1976)
1976 | Thriller

"Also, I would say probably Taxi Driver, just as a piece of acting and just fabulous scene-setting brilliance from Scorsese and characterization from De Niro. That’s one of those films I just watch in awe of all of it, because it’s just so uncompromising. I saw Avengers yesterday, and it was such a fun romp and really entertaining and decently done. That’s the kind of film adults watch today, when in the 1970s, when Taxi Driver came out, that was the kind of film that adults would watch. That and French Connection and Godfather and Bonnie and Clyde. Anything pre-Star Wars, really. The preserve of grown-up cinema in those days were genuinely grown-up movies, and that goes for everything I’m doing as well, from Star Trek to Ready Player One or even Mission: Impossible. They’re pure entertainment rather than think pieces, which is what film cinema used to be in the mainstream."

When I first heard about The Orville and that it was being made by Seth MacFarlane honestly I didn't have any faith in it because I figured it was going to basically be Family guy in space... No thing but homophobic and rape jokes.

Oh man I have never been so glad to be wrong.

I heard from a few friends that it was actually a pretty amazing show ... Even better then the new Star Trek show so I though hell why not give it a shot... And I am so glad I did! I was not prepared for how much I was going to live The Orville. The cast is amazing and the stories are even better!
