David McK (3425 KP) rated Star Wars, Vol. 4: Last Flight of the Harbinger in Books
Jan 30, 2019
Entry #4 in Marvel's new run of Star Wars stories, in which Han, Luke, Leia and the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 (and some expendable 'Red Shirts', to borrow a phrase from Star Trek) hijack a Star Destroyer.
Running concurrently, we also have a look at the war from the other side of the divide, from the point of view of a Stormtrooper squad, who believe the Rebels to be terrorists and that freedom = law and order (rather than the Rebellions view of what entails freedom).
Said squad led by a character Luke had previously encountered on the Smugglers moon of Nar-Shadda, and with said sqaud tasked with 'recovering' the hijacked Destroyer.
AS is also now standard, we also have a flash-back to Kenobi's time on Tattoine looking after (from afar) Luke - if you ask me, it's a wonder how that kid didn't know something was up!
All-in-all, though, I have to say that I have enjoyed these 'main' Star Wars stories - hit and miss though they may be - more than, say, the Darth Vader series, with this one proving to be no exception.

Finally it's over
When the Star Wars films first came out again I was super excited, especially as The Force Awakens and Rogue One were quite good. But after the total letdowns that were Last Jedi and Solo, I've completely lost interest in all things Star Wars and am really quite bored of it all. I went into Rise of Skywalker not feeling particularly interested, and I came out feeling pretty much the same.
Overall this looks good which shouldn't be a surprise ,although there are some dodgy CGI moments with Luke and Leia. There are some great nods to the original episodes and some returning characters too, which are a refreshing sight as I really think putting Carrie Fisher in this was a bad idea. Leia has no purpose whatsoever and looks out of place, and you can really see how badly they've cobbled her part together. The droids prove very welcome in every scene they're in, which is good as without them I wouldn't have been able to cope. The majority of returning characters in this suffer a lot: Finn, Poe, Rose, Chewie etc, they barely have anything to do. Whilst Kylo Ren has a decent storyline and character arc, and I loved his development the most (despite that terrible ending), this film is basically the Rey show. And 3 films in, I'm pretty sick of it. The reveal of Rey's heritage is laughable, and the ending for her is just so ridiculous. I found her a very irritating character and I'm just so bored of the back and forth between her and Kylo.
The plot itself is basic and seems very similar to every other Star Wars film that has come before it. There are a lot of unexplainable character actions, and some moments where you're surprised (pleasantly) about what has happened only to find out not very long later that it isn't what you thought. Bummer.
I was going to rate this lower, but I appreciate my general negativity towards Star Wars at the moment may have impacted on my review. Still I didn't particularly enjoy this and i really don't think it's a fitting final part. I'm so glad this is the last Star Wars film we'll see (for now).

David McK (3425 KP) rated Heir to the Empire (Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy, #1) in Books

This is pretty much the book that re-ignited the whole Star Wars craze. (Re)reading it, it's not hard to see why.
Set after the events of the original trilogy, "Heir to the Empire" also introduces a host of new characters and soon-to-be-official aliens and planet names (it is here that Coruscant is first named, for example).
Reading the trilogy as a whole, though, you also have to wonder how much inside-info Zahn had on the whole Star Wars mythos: clones are (re)introduced here, the Clone Wars are given a larger role than their original throw-away reference and the role of the Jedi are expanded upon.
I know there's a lot of hostility towards spin-off books, but do yourself a favour and read this one! After all, the original material had to be good for their to BE a spin-off in the first place, and the quality of the first spin-off can often be determined by the quantity of books that followed it ...

Movie Critics (823 KP) rated Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) in Movies

On its own, Marquand’s film is a lesser film than its two direct prequels. However, it naturally benefits from the effect of “sequel continuity” – the idea that a sequel requires less focus on story building and character development...

better than the prequels by a long shot. (3 more)
Fun little callbacks to the originals
Acting is actually quite good from the newcomers.
The direction is spot on.
This is a fun time at the movies.
This is a very solid addition to the Star Wars franchise. Here's an amazing alternate movie poster in the style of stained glass, which I kinda LOVE.

WOW! What a waste of time and effort.

Well, my review of being shoddy is due to mixed feelings. The story line up until the last 25 minutes was good. I like the cast. the soundtrack, sound effects, special effects and costumes. But that the main characters died doing the right thing I believe is below Star Wars.
David McK (3425 KP) rated Star Wars: The Truce at Bakura in Books

One of the earliest official Star Wars tie-in novels, I remember reading this when it first came out in about '94.
What's interesting is how perception changes: at the time, I remember thinking it was one of the best books I'd read, but now (with time behind me) it's not quite as good as I remember. Still worth a read, though!
